Encouraging tourist figures for Bali for first quarter 2005

Tourist figures are up in Bali according to the latest report. That is great news for the islands economy. At this very moment it seems quiet and my thoughts are that the flow of tourists to Bali goes in spurts lasting a couple of weeks.

Right now you could not ask for nicer weather, blue skies, powerful sunshine and no rain. Walking around on Poppies Lane I with Ika I saw about 2-3 people in each restaurant / bar.

Today Internet Outpost is virtually empty, that will change though once the beach goers come back and check there email before going out to party. Cathay Pacific now has 11 flights a week from Hong Kong so confidence has returned.

For those coming to Bali in the near future here is my tip: spend a couple of nights in the Kuta/ Legian/ Seminyak area enjoying the beach and restaurants, then hire a car and make it a point to drive slowly around the island. Be sure to drive no more than 2 hours each day, stay somewhere new and get lost at least once. Sights and sounds abound and your vision of Bali is just around the corner. Driving a car over here is no problem and people are cool about giving directions. Get out of the southern area and have yourself an adventure. I will be developing a list of cool independently owned places I recommend to give you access to the remote areas. One of those is Seraya Shores in East Bali.

Planning to come around late Aug/early Sept to surf and see the island with my wife…so it’s cool to drive? I heard some horror stories, but I have driven in England and Barbados which have similar (different side for US drivers like me) disorientations and non-defensive drivers. My inclination is to book everything ahead of time (at least hotels) due to high-season. Should I take a chance and not book except for first few days? Plan to stay about 12-13 days and trying to limit number of hotels to check-in/check-out.

G’Day Nick,

Looking forward to reading the list you are putting together.

You have certainly started off with one of the best - Seraya Shores.

Hey folks, do yourself a favour and check this place out when you are over the east coast of the island. it is without a doubt BLOODY FANTASTIC!

Jim,

I highly recommend renting an SUV and taking yourself around he island. Listen most of the time you will be driving at 20-30 mph. Nothing much can happen and you will enjoy the freedom.

There are surfing breaks all the way from Medewi in West Bali to Keramas and beyond in East Bali.

You’ve got beach breaks in Canggu, Seminyak, Legian, Kuta, Dreamland and the best surfing is on the Bukit (Uluwatu, Bingin, Balangan, Padang Padand, Nusa Dua).

Don’t forget about Nusa Lembongan (island )either.

I reckon the way to go is to book a few days in the Kuta area so you can enjoy the nightlife and surf the Bukit in the day time. Then you can take of west for a couple of days and east for a few days.

Do you have recommendations on who to rent an SUV from? Also, was thinking of staying in Jimbaran at either Jamahal Resort or Villa Balquisse rather than Kuta proper. Alternatively at the Santika in Tuban. Your comments/recommendations on any of those acommodations would be most appreciated. Thanks!
