I don't think anyone should even suggest driving drunk. It just isn't right.

I LOVE IT!!!! That should be handed out on all aircraft coming into Bali. I'm a cab driver in London and as you know there's so many rules to follow, but when I get to Bali and rent a motorbike, I feel free. I cant imagine getting away with anything by saying "Why you crash me"!!

Relax--that's good advice when driving. Limit yourself to about 3 hours per day getting from point A to B (shorter drives after that are fine). Consider renting outside of Kuta just to avoid driving yourself out of there, back and forth. Many rental places outside the hotspots (Kuta, Nusa Dua) will pick you up as part of the rental deal, and even drive you back to the airport. Main thing--drive slow, let the speedsters pass you! Otherwise, rent a car with a driver (but be prepared for the sob stories about his poor village, how tough life is, etc. etc.).

Interesting take on driving in Bali, although I have to say, I know 12 people that have been killed in drunken driving accidents over the past 17 years, including two expats. No one should ever drive drunk in Bali.
