Calling a waiter in Bali

In a Balinese warung or restaurant there is usually no dress code. The climate and proximity to the beach mean people are very casually dressed.

Some places will seat you when you walk in depending on the time of day but others, warungs in particular will let you seat yourself. Warung style seating is actually wide table pushed together end to end with bench seating. Just jump in and mingle with some strangers.

To summon a waiter in Bali you politely call permisi Blee, for a waitress permisi Mbak. In Java the word for Blee is Mas and both mean brother. A menu is a daftar makanan, a knife a pisau, a fork a garpu, a spoon a sendok and a plate a piring. The word for have is ada, as in, ada pisau? To ask for a drink without sugar you would say tolong tanpa gula (tolong=please, tanpa=without). To ask for the bill you can say saya injin bayar, I want to pay.

Tipping is not considered a rule although you can give a few thousand rupiah if you feel the need.

G’Day Nick,

Nicely compiled. Just to add, when you ask for the bill then you could also say ‘Minta nota’.

Alternatively, if you wanted tea without sugar, then say ‘Teh tawar’.

Apologies Nick, I just thought I’d add a couple of other ways of expression.
