One of the more peaceful pastimes here in Bali is bird-watching. Being a tropical paradise you can find birds all over the island but one of the best places is the Bali Barat Nasional Park in west Bali. The park covered 760 sq kms and you must hire a guide to show you around. You can hire a guide from the park HQ. The hikes have already been planned and range from 2-12 hours.

The Bali Starling, Balis only endemic bird can be seen and although the scenery of the park is not that great it does extend from the coast to the mountains.

Other places on the island that will interest bird-watchers are the Bali Bird Park (Taman Burung) at Batubulan has large aviaries for you to wander. In the central highlands around Gunung Batukaru and the Lakes Tamblingan and Buyan you will find un- spoilt areas that are also suited.

Those staying in Ubud will be able to arrange half-day bird-watching trips from there. Victor Mason, owner of Beggars Bush Pub in Campuhan organizes them. (0361) 975009 8am-5pm.

The incredible bio-diversity in Indonesia makes it an attractive destination for expeditions such as this one.
