Bali is a tropical island located in the middle of the Indonesian archipelago, 8 degrees south of the equator. Just how long Bali has been populated and from where those people came from is hard to nail down. There is evidence suggest some came from Eastern India, Malaysia and other parts of SE Asia. One of the oldest archeological relics on the island is Goa Gajah, the oldest excavated relic of ancient Balinese culture.
A group of factors, both geological and historical have led to the unique culture in Bali. Firstly Bali is lucky to have 4 large mountain lakes which feed the island with water all year. This in turn has allowed the extensive development of ‘sawah’ (rice fields) that blanket the island and provide a solid base which people can rely on. A whole animist set of beliefs has grown up, with the Gods residing in the mountains, the demons in the ocean and the people in the valleys.
