Ubud's rise to prominence

People often say that Ubud is the arts center of Bali, or the cultural center of Bali. It was not always that way. Ubud is a part of Gianyar regency, which also contains the town of Gianyar. The Gianyar regency was formerly an ancient kingdom. When the Dutch took control of Bali in 1908, Gianyar was 1 of 2 kingdoms left. The king of Ubud, Cokorda Gede Agung Sukawati (quite a funny fellow in real life) oversaw Ubud's artistic tradition continue with the arrival of foreign artists in the 1920's and 1930's.

Ubud's prominence was due to 2 factors, the Sukawati royal family who ruled over Ubud and much of Gianyar regency. They encouraged artists from all over Bali to move to their court. The second factor is tourism, Ubud being transformed from a peaceful, scenic backwater, to an up and coming tourist destination. In the surrounding area there are some fabulous hotels including the Four Seasons and the Amandari. Take a look these prices and plan your next trip!
