Bali Needs Suicide Intervention Centres
Last week I put up an article about suicides being on the increase in Bali and now a leading Psychiatrist has called for Suicide Crisis Centres in all Regencies in Bali to curb an alarming increase in suicide rates.
A rapid increase in suicide rates in Bali have officials increasingly concerned and looking for means to address the desperation that precipitates the decision to take one's life.
According to a report in the tempointeraktif, Balinese psychiatrist Professor Dr. L.K. Suryani of Bali's Udayana University says that 101 Bali residents have taken their lives in the first half of 2006.
"Because of this" according to Dr Suryani, "we are pressuring the provincial government of Bali and the regional governments to take definitive steps to overcome this problem"
Suryani recommends that suicide crisis centers be established in every regency in Bali to permit potential suicide victims the opportunity to discuss their problems with trained professionals.
According to Bali's world-renowned psychiatrist Dr. Suryani the factors leading to suicide in Bali are poverty, poor communication within the family unit and the erosion of traditional values within the Balinese community.

I agree with article and the need for trained counsellors to assist peole in crises as the issue of suicide is one that unfortunately affects all.
Those that are thinking of ending their life and those that are left behind when a loved one does commit suicide come from all walks of life and include tourists as well as locals.
My wife and I have assisted a psychotic woman in Bali and found the Psychiatric Services available for tourists to be quite good. Contacting Consular support from Jakarta was harder to arrange…..
I am a Mental Health Nurse based in an Emergency Department and spend a great deal of my time dealing with individuals who wish to end their lives and their loved ones.
The vast majority change their minds once the crises they are facing has been resolved, some are suffering from depression and once this is treated never consider this an option again.
I do think that our belief that owning the latest gadget or being a consumer brings happiness is being challenged more and more.
The best defence a person can have against feeling so low and finding no meaning in life is friends & family, friends who will accept you for who you are and not what you own or what look like and Family who love & cherrish you no matter what.
