Recently while downtown in Kuta and Seminyak I have been noticing that the fashion trend among female tourists is to wear short-shorts and by 'short' I mean slightly more than a bikini. I don't know if this is part of the beach culture or a wider movement, but ladies wishing to stop traffic are well aware of what it takes. The other day I saw a porky Australian lady who was too fat to wear her shorts. Her solution was to completely unzip them and let me tell you, every Balinese guy on Poppies Lane II stopped to stare!
Regarding men's fashion it seems the surf shorts and expensive Quiksilver t-shirt works for most people. Last night I grabbed a beer in Tubes Bar on Poppies II in Kuta, a very popular surfer bar. They were showing a pirated copy of War Of The Worlds and I watched part of it. Sitting in front of me were 2 guys wearing matching black tank tops. I don't think the effect it created was probably the one they were hoping for but Kuta is a mixed bag and I'm sure they will meet friendly people.
Visitors coming to Bali should not worry about what to wear at night. Tropical weather means we have a mixture of elegant ladies in dresses, other ladies completely overdoing it with accessories, smart people who dress cool but casual and slobs who show up without a shirt. So don't stress it. Bali is international, cool, mellow, dressy, classy or whatever you want it to be.
