Moving to Bali: How to do it-part II

As a foreigner you have the advantage of connections overseas. Use them and also leverage technology (the internet, cell phones, etc.) to help you get where you want to go. You would be amazed at the number of expats here who run businesses who tell me they hate the internet, don't have a website and can't see the value in getting one.

To survive and prosper in Bali you have to get your 'ducks a row' and not rely on a pipe dream. Before you commit to moving write yourself a business plan, forcing yourself to answer the hard questions. If you don't know how to write one take a college class or go to Google and type 'how to write a business plan'.

Talking to Cody today, the main thing he has had to do since arriving have been to rent a villa. He will now see about getting a Stavol for his appliances, some kind of long term visa and home internet access. All these are easy to arrange and then he will be 'off to the races', already earning a living here. I think one of the businesses I could start would be 'Relocation consulant'.

Also, equally important is the knowledge of Bali itself. Visit the island several times and get to know the people, land and culture closely. Explore many parts of the islands, and make a lot of friends, expats and locals. Check out local industries. Look for opportunities. Don’t just stay in Bali. Go out to Java and other islands. You may find business opportunities there too. You can live in Bali, but have business elsewhere.

If you can afford it, move in and stay for a longer period like a year or two without doing any business. Depending on your budget, you can spend as little as $500/month on lodging, food and others. It is still a lot cheaper than making bad investment.

If you are a retiree on fixed income, you may find that your retirement money buys a lot more in Bali. You may be able to live off your income without doing any business at all. If you can feel comfortable living like that, why risk losing your money on a business venture?

Good Luck.
