Sean, Chris and I are in Las Vegas for the Webmaster World annual conference. We are staying at a new hotel, the Renaissance, which is clean but boring. Most of the hotels in Vegas have a casino and the newer ones are themed in some kind of way. We met up with Jen Leo, travel writer and book editor and her new man. We were also joined by Brian from Arizona and Ioan from Romania who are into the web world.
For dinner Jen suggested a place called Nobu (4455 Paradise Rd, Hard Rock Hotel) which is Japanese. The place was packed and the noise lelels reflected people’s excitement. The Vegas scene is called the adult playround and people from all walks of life come here for the chance to live in a fantasy. We spotted a large billboard on the back of a trailer that was being driven up and down the Strip (Las Vegas Blvd). It said ‘Escorts. Girls straight to your room.’ No ambiguity there.
Fake boobs and blonde hair are the go at night time and the booth right behind us featured two fembots who were obviously in the 'friendship industry'. One would occassionally turn round and have a few words with the table of guys sitting adjacent, its necessary to source new leads even when you are on the job. Nobu was a bit expensive for my taste, compared to Bali. We ordered a selection of dishes, bottle of saki and some large beers. Our bill was $280.
Jen is doing VivaLasVegasBlog and wanted to show us some of her fav places. After Nobu we headed for Mix, the bar on the 64th floor of the Mandalay Bay. Its an awesome bar! The entry is via a glass elevator on the outside of the building and we got a tremendous view of the Strip, with the Luxor pyramid right in front of us. Seating was inside or outside and we avoided a $10 cover by arriving before 10pm.
A few drinks later we drove to a smaller casino called Silverton, off of the Strip. This older hotel attracts more locals and is a departure from the high end stuff going on at places like Mirage, Belagio and Luxor.
