What Indonesians in Bali have heard about the Yogya quake

The Yogyakarta earthquake in Central Java is grabbing all the headlines. Here in Bali there are many people from Central Java and Yogya itself. I spoke to my sister in law, Ningrum about the earth quake in Yogyakarta. Ningrum is from Semarang in northern Central Java. She said there was an earthquake there too, but no damage.

I think the typical Asian attitude to death and disasters is ‘kasihan’ (poor them). I’ve seen bus wreaks in Nepal, where half the bus was killed, and the other half were sitting at the side of the road, some gleefully pointing at the bus at the bottom of the canyon. In the developing world, when your number comes up, it comes up.

Here’s what Ningrum said.
