Watching DVD’s in Seminyak Bali

My new laptop has a DVD player and last night Ika and I watched a DVD together. I have a selection of about 10 now and her first choice, ‘Hotel Rwanda’, didn’t work. That’s what you get with ‘dodgy’ DVD’s I guess.

Her second choice was ‘The Castle‘, a classic about a working class Australian family who are about to lose their house to a compulsory acquisition. I tell you I see people in Kuta everyday who could be stand ins for that movie. Some of the lines in the film just crack me up…”dad loves to stand and watch the power lines next to our house, he says it reminds him of man’s ability to generate electricity.”

I travelled around Australia for a year (’92-’93), hitch hiking and camping out, finally getting arrested and kicked out of Australia for fruit picking! Along the way my friends and I enjoyed the company of many Aussies in their homes and actually some of the roughest people were the friendliest. Here’s an article I wrote for BootsnAll.com several years ago about one encounter we had.

If you want a entertaining Australian movie, that hits on many of the stereotypes, The Castle is worth a try. Ika said “I think they are simple family.” That’s the truth.

When I brought some Bali dvd’s back to the UK I found a few only play on my pc and a few only on the tv dvd player and not the pc, but of the 30+ I bought they all played on one or the other.
