Thoughts on having a kid in Bali

Having your child in Bali would probably sound like having it in Tijuana to most Americans and would be the last thing they would want to do. My impression of the system over here, at least the private health care system is quite positive.

Our doctor, Adam Zakaria, was professional throughout and had modern ultra-sound equipment in his Denpasar office. We would visit him every 2 weeks for a charge of 65,000rp, plus the cost of vitamins (15,000rp) if we wanted them.

The hospital we used, Puri Bunda, was modern, spotlessly clean, had good equipment and good facilities for me and Ika to stay. There were 4 classes of rooms, we chose the 3rd kind which was great. Our room had twin beds, TV, phone, AC, fridge, hot water, room service, nurse on call. The final cost of our time in hospital, including the room, the procedure, pediatrician, inoculations, birth certificate, nurses, room service and ride home was just over 6m rp ($670).

I think the Balinese nurses bring some of that earthy village identity with them and that helps. They all gather round and start massaging, no one is shouting or panicking, they've seen it all a hundred times before back in the village. Yes there are some things that Ika and her friends thought were not up to speed (the resistance to giving milk in the room, the tacking on of 300,000rp to the bill for stuff included in the original price etc.) but to walk away paying 6m rp, I'm a happy camper.

Back at our house in Seminyak Jevon is getting used to his new life (literally) and it's alright. We dress him in light baby clothes and sleep with AC to keep him cool. I can tell when he's hot as his fat cheeks get red. I think the weather in general is good for kids, they won't catch pneumonia and you can change their clothes without them freezing. Hiring a nanny won't be difficult and that will give Ika and me a rest.

If I was living in the US and could afford to take a couple on months off work, I would definitely choose to have my kid in Bali as you can relax and keep your costs down.

G’Day Nick,

You got off pretty light there cost wise. In Oz you would have had to add a couple of zeros on that total!.

Hi Nick,

Congrats on the birth of your new bundle of joy.

My wife and I spent our Honeymoon in Bali and have been trying to return, however we hear it is not too safe for Americans. Maybe you can shed some light on travel.

Anyway we purchased several hand carved pieces while we were there, one of them being a beautiful handcarved door. Everyone who has seen it loves the piece. Can you recommend any other woodcarving places that I could contact for shipping gifts to the U.S.? Any advice would be appreciated.

Congrats!
Dwayne
