Recently a magazine article I read talked about what it's like being an expat in Bali. The European writer moved to Bali from Phuket Thailand and compared the 2. He said that for him Bali is the best expat community in the world and that is what makes living here so pleasant. In the past I have mentioned my reasons for choosing Bali as a place to live. My criteria were affordability, decent internet access, an international airport and year round tourism. I didn't really choose Bali, it chose itself. People who I've met since have told me I made a great choice and that the expat scene here is the best in Asia.
In my neighborhood, Seminyak, there are many people from France and Italy, involved in a variety of professions from restaurants, exporting artwork and furniture, to clothes design and manufacture.
Western goods and services are widely available and those little items we crave for are getting easy to find. Within the last year Bali has opened its first micro-brewery, Storm Brewing, and with places like Bali Deli, Dijon Deli and Ace Hardware, you can live well combining the local produce with your own tastes.
As I just found out, having a baby in Bali is user friendly. There are international schools here in Sanur and Kerobokan and places like these will increase with demand. Bali is a good place to be an expat.

Coni,
Thanks for asking. Actually I haven’t been following the news until late tonight and don’t know how’s he’s doing. Hopefully he was nowhere near there. Isn’t this Al Queda thing a drag? Bali, NYC, Spain, London, what are they trying to prove?
There are 200.000 Portuguese in London alone, some of which are my friends, so I’m also concerned… Just hope everything is ok and the lost are few!
Well, peace just doesn’t look what it used to anymore, does it? We just refuse to learn to live with our differences, when in the end that’s what makes us rich!!!

When Bali Blast, Mariott Blast, ‘SuperPower Countries’ put travel warnings for Indonesia,
Now i am looking forward to see what they are going to do, would the treatment be the same toward UK.
Terorism can happen everywhere. There is no such term of safe place or country, when the time come for us to die, everyone will die……….
Could you please email me your address in Bali? I wish to send a gift for Ika….
cheers
Coni

I’m an expat in the Caribbean where I have a bookshop. I’m from Wales, lived in London and sailed to the Caribbean. The Islands I live on are wealthy, have only four month a year tourism (enough) and the US islands with all the amenities of K-Mart’s
are just a ferry ride away. I’ve been to Bali several times, I’m coming again within the month I hope. I keep thinking maybe its time to move on… maybe Bali. It would be nice to find a business and partner to each live part of the year in the Caribbean and Bali.
Life is great almost wherever you find yourself - especially if you don’t need to think about the weather.
(I am surfing this blog, reading about a wedding, its really great).

Hi Nick
Recently visited Bali for the 3rd time.
How can I get to live there - I love the place.
As for working, I have no idea what I could do - I currently am an Office Manager and run an office of about 150 people.
Anyone looking for an Office Manager with 20 years experience.
PS. love reading your stories.
regards
Leanne
