Two of the great things about Bali that I have close to me are the ocean and my son Jevon. When it comes down to it the basics are what it’s all about. People try to dress Bali up with shopping malls, minimalist decor, late night parties and resorts. It's the island and the people that made the place. The closest people to me are Ika and Jevon. I've still got them so I am lucky. Jevon is 3 months old and has started to look round and reach out for things. Ika says he likes the color red and looks up every time a jet passes. She thinks he likes bicycles and playing with boys rather than girls. A whole world of discovery awaits him and I hope he remembers how much effort his dad put in for him. I plan to get him a job when he is 8 so I can retire at 50. My little place in Seminyak is not a palace and I do not frequent the bars that much, but the Indian Ocean is at the bottom of my street, how lucky is that!
Thursday morning there maybe not too many people on the beach, but that means more beach for me. Same with bargains, seats in restaurants, waves or whatever else you're into. The combination of the bombing, Galungan and Ramadan have thinned the crowds out and as any smart traveller knows, the best time to visit is when everyone else is leaving. Bali has a variety of beaches ranging from black volcanic sand all the way to creamy white. Which one you choose is up to you, just know though that you will have plenty of space and on certain occasions, at least until Christmas, the entire beach to yourself. If that sounds like hell, then that's Bali.
The best things in life are in Bali

HA!! What a Q T pie.
Enjoy.
Hi Nick That is a really cute picture of your son. One look and I know that he must take after your wife. He will grow ufp too quickly and you will wish he was 3 months old again. Jevon is lucky to get to grow up in Bali. Marc
Jevon is getting more gorgeous every pic you post. I can’t believe the size and depth of his eyes. I envy you your lifestyle in Bali, you are completely correct when you say it is the island and the people that make Bali. They both have too much character to be destroyed by anyone. Unfortunately I have not been able to get up there this year (I am having dreadful withdrawal symptoms) but nothing will stop me from spending a few weeks there mid 2006. Hopefully you will have a “anyone invited” BBQ and I will be able to actually meet you and your family, instead of just reading about you all.
hey Nick
he look ever so gorgeous! bet ya’ he’ll be more popular than his old man in such a young age
better enjoy it before he start the speech and asking ‘why?’ every few seconds.
tis very true that life is too short and we ought to treasure it with our loved ones. i’ve lost a close friend at jimbaran last saturday. she left an 8 year old daughter and husband. they were out celebrating for her sister’s new born baby. t’was a very very tragic affair indeed. we maybe going back to Bali next year once the 2nd one is born and stay at Pelangi Seminyak again!
Beth, THanks for the commnets. I am very sad to hear about your friend. Living here I can continue quite easily as I don’t know anyone involved in the blasts. It must be tough for friends and relatives and leave a dark feeling everytime they hear the word ‘Bali’.
Hope to meet you next time you come. We’ll have a bbq at my house and invite other cool people.
Hi Nick!
what a sweet baby! how lucky you are…
Thanks for writing what matters the most in Bali. As half balinese, i often look at Bali from “inner” and “outer” eyes. I know most people come to this island for its beaches, sunsets, shopping…etc..etc… even domestic tourists. But sometimes I just can’t help to feel they’re missing out the “real” Bali, i.e. the people and their unique culture.
Been reading your blog (though not so regularly), I’d love to meet both you and Ika someday. I’ll celebrate Iedul Fitri this year in Bali… so if you’re around that time, pls invite me also to your bbq party!
salam,
-retno-
a year before i probably will not leave a comment, but as a new father to a 5 months old boy, i am now know exactly how u feel.
salam buat si bayi dan keluarga
Nick
thanks for your invitation, will take up the offer next time we are in the neighbourhood. it would be nice to finally make your acquaintance and meet Ika and Jevon in person!
the saddest thing about my friend is, though she is from wealthy family, she is the down to earth and gentlest person i’ve ever come across. never could understand why the good ones always die young.
hope weather nice on your side of the pond cause it’s start bucketing here in england. yep, winter is soon with us.
