Ika and I went to a bbq last night at a friends place on Jl. Double Six. Jim is a 65 year Chinese American who is very knowledgeable and has something to say on every subject. Also there were some of Aussie surf friends including Stewart and Devo from Byron Bay. They had all been surfing earlier in the day and as anyone who has been surfing can tell you we have had a storm swell that created large unwieldy waves.
The guys had gone down to Airports and jumped on a boat to take them out. Originally 4 of them entered the water and tried to catch waves. The large dumpers were too wild and 2 of the crew tried to get onto another boat. Said Devo, Palu and Ben went looking for a fishing boat, any boat to get into.
Devo and Stewart surfed for a short while before Devo caught a decent wave, lost it and ended up getting washed into Jimbaran Bay. He had to paddle into shore and get a taxi out to where he started. While swimming across Jimbaran Bay Devo noticed a wide strip of brown color in the water. He said a strong storm will grab sand from the bottom and churn it up and he thought this was the situation. On close inspection it turned out not to be brown sand but effluent flowing from a pipe. This is really disgusting said Devo, who has vowed never to surf there again. He told me up in Canggu they dump raw sewage into the river too. Stewart said one time at the bottom of the Sunset Rd he saw 6 tankers dumping sewage into the stream there. Needless to say where the planes at the airport dump their waste.
The water in Bali is usually pretty good though and this was just a strange set of conditions.

Hi Nick,
This may sound kinda stupid but i kinda need to know; i will be staying around Kuta but obviously want to surf all over, i will not be renting a car so where do i leave my wallet, clothes, etc… when i am out surfing?
When you get a boat out at Kuta or Airports how much should i pay and do you have to arrange a time for them to come and get you or do they just hangout in the channel or something?
any info would be good
thanks
