Sleep is a precious commodity in Seminyak Bali

Its true what they say, sleep is hard to get when you are a new parent. Jevon is only 4 days old but he's already making his dad a tired fellow. Its not his fault, he's just hungry and can handle only liquid food. Last night Ika and I fed and changed him 10 times between 9pm and 4am. Basically when he's hungry he screams, we feed him and 15 minutes later he pees or poops. We change him and 15 minutes later he's hungry. You get the idea. Its like clockwork with no let up. I was working on my computer till about 4am as I knew there was no chance of sleep. I don't mind helping out but realize I am going to be useless the next day.

We've talked about getting a nanny, but that won't help me out if I still have to stay up all night and change diapers (nappies). To be honest its Ika who does most of the changing, I'm just on the periphery, but with the lights on sleeping is hard. My suggestion to Ika was to get a nanny who came for the night, 11pm-7am. That would work and possibly be an okay gig for someone providing they can train him to sleep at night.

Tonight something wonderful happened. Ika's mother offered to look after Jevon the whole night! Ika and I can sleep all night with lights off. I'm liking this family networking and the Pampers I bought this morning should hold the goods until morning. There's got to be an unemployed Balinese girl in Seminyak who doesn't mind sleeping while earning money.

Give the mother-in-law the gig, she’d probably love to do it.

AAAAAAAAAHHH,
The joys of having a new baby!!

Keep the room light during the day, dark only at night.

Then Jevon will start to learn night from day!

Good Luck….

Hi Guys
congrats on the birth of Jevon. Lots of new parents don’t realise that babies also need water - not just milk. They get thirsty too and milk is mainly a food. Try giving Jevon a drink of water if he is screaming for food more often than you think he needs it, you cn even add a very little bit of OJ to the bottle to give it some flavour if he won’t take the straight water. Also as Tracey said - keep the room dark at night, won’t take him long to figure out it is sleep time.

Ahh, those first few weeks are killer, cuz every one is trying to get into the routine.

Breast milk is still the ultimate food. My 2nd daughter is 7 months now and is still a bit on it. We just started on watery mush rice in May.

If Ika can deal with it, there is absolutely NO substite for breast feeding. Not only does your son get all the goodness, but he gets Ika’s immunity too, like if Ika or you get sick, the baby won’t (or just a bit and recovers first), cuz the immunity is passed on through breast milk.

If the baby sleeps with Ika, it is available on demand and on tap, and everyone sleeps better. Baby will feed less frequently.

Milk production will regulate very quickly and keep up with demand, just drink plenty of fluids. And the nutritional composition will change as the needs changes, this is especially important in the first few weeks.

It is so important to give it a really good try. This is why your doctor gets pissed off and doesn’t want bottle feeding in your room.

Thanks Chris, I’ll give the breast milk a try, maybe a shot in my coffee would help my energy level.

As harsh as it may sound you need to instill routine NOW, a baby at that age only needs to be fed every 4 hours. The baby won’t cry if he is just wet, as that’s not that uncomfortable.

Sounds like he could have colic, as it sound like he is drinking too quickly, slow the feeding down. Don’t feed him every 30 mins as it will grow into a very bad habit.

Find Kim Patra, she is a midwife from Australia based in Bali, I am sure she can give you both some good mothercraft skills.

GOOD LUCK!

Hee hhee hee … liked the idea of you having a squirt of Ikea’s milk in your tea. No but seriously i think like the previous emailer stated that Jevon is or seems to be guzzling like there no tomorrow.
I am no Doc but interesting what Guruann says about colic…although i hope hes just got a nice appetite like his old fella…hee hee.

By the way Nick i like the name Jevon. No seriousley i do think its kewl for the little dude. I am glad you didnt call him Muhammed or something similar as i thought you were going to. Not that i have anything against that name just that if i was the little dude i would prefer Jevon and at least it has that little bit of originallityism (like that word eh !) about it.

Yes Nick your goin to have to get used to less continuous sleep during nightfall till the wee man is 18 months and older. Probably the first 6 munes (months) will be the worst up till the 12 munes. You have always got the option of a little helper and you can always grab forty winks here and there sitting under a palm tree with a nice cool water melon juicer swinging back and fro in a hammock in the shade on the beach. Oh to die for or what eh. Go for it Nicko mate go for it my son as they say.

Good luck and good night (hopefully)
Mark
