Saturday night Ika and I were invited to a bbq at the new home of an Indonesian friend. The friend, Norma is a dance instructor at the gym I go to and actually is very good, having studied in Switzerland. The location of the bbq was Panorama Cottages 2 in Kuta, inside that loop at the bottom end of Jl. Legian.
It is nice for me to attend a bbq without being the one who is responsible and interesting to see how other people do it. Norma and friends had prepared some simosa type snacks along with chips and other little nibbles. They had a satay grill out front and a counter top grill they were using to cook steak and corn. It was fun looking at the way things were progressing at reminded me of my early bbqs when I had trouble with the grill, no cooler and no help.
As guests arrived the party got to about 15 in total, featuring a couple of German guys, an American, a gaggle of Indonesia people from the gym and me. One of the guests, Komang from Medewi in west Bali, kept on saying out loud that my bbq was better, until Ika asked her to quiet down. She also observed that even with a relatively small amount of food (but a big pot of rice) you can feed many Indonesians. That is in total contrast to my bbqs where we go through pounds of meat. Komang suggested that bule can eat a lot so its more work.
It would be nice if more people took the initiative to have a bbq and I think I am going to suggest to some likely candidates that we co operate by sharing equipment and manpower.
Once the ladies had figured out the satay grill they managed to fan some heat and cook some sosis (sausages) which were popular. Ika and I left after about 3 hours and walked home to Seminyak along the beach that took about 40 minutes.
