After lunch we checked out some more of the local shopping and I shared a train with them back towards the airport at the far eastern end of the island. Fawzee lives in a place called Bedok, which is close to the airport. Siti pointed out a Malay neighborhood called Paya Lebar. It consists of many high-rises and during Ramadan is very busy, with people praying in the early morning and evening. The old airport used to be located in Paya Lebar. The way the MRT works is that the Changi airport train does not run from downtown. You have to take the train to Tanah Merah, then change for the Changi train on the other track. This is not immediately obvious if you are downtown, so remember not to wait for a train that says 'airport' because there won't be one.
Fawzee and Siti live at home with their parents, which works out well for Fawzee because his mum is a great cook. Siti told me that she does not ever think she will own a house, as just a 3-room apartment will go for $200,000. Most Singaporeans live in apartments and that is just another unique thing about this country.
Arriving at Changi airport via the MRT you take the escalator right into terminal 2. Make sure you are in the right terminal as there is a sky-train to terminal 1, the place where flights to Bali leave from.
