Bali has experienced a few robberies of late since the decline in the economy. I just read a hilarious article in the Bali Advertiser under the category ‘Paradise…In sickness & In Health’.
In it an RN from Australia turned herself into a self defence expert and gave out information for other expats to use against intruders, such as “Option to consider if you fight back: scratching with your fingernails, biting, poking in the eyes, kicking in the knee or groin, hitting on the nose, jabbing in the eyes or throat.”
I can just imagine someone trying to kick an intruder in the knee while he is swinging a machete. Of course the benchongs in my neighborhood will probably have the scratching down pat. Close to my house there have been 3 robberies in the last month, all on solo females out late at night, all in dark alleys. If you are out late get a taxi to your door. If attacked shout “Maling, maling” (thief) or tolong (help).
In general Bali is a safe place to live and you should not go overboard by putting bars on the windows.

“….see the metal bars on many windows and doors. Yes they are decorative and they serve a purpose.”
Yeah..they keep would-be intruders out, but they could also keep you locked inside when your house is on fire.
“Any Kontol knows that you can put hinges and a lock on yer metal creation and open it from the inside… but then again a real kontol might not think of that…”
yeah and what could be easier when you house is on fire. Can’t work out who’s more stupid you or macaroni head.
why are so many people being so hostile, I thought this place was for friendly conversation and helpful tips, and not for agressive, pointless scolds. Fuck man, if you think someone is saying something rather unlogical or whatever, just make your point in a funny friendly kinda way. ok ? man what’s of funny calling another person stupid?
