My last 24 hours in Seminyak Bali

My internet connection at the house has been crap since I got back to Bali. In the last 12 hours I have not been able to get online. Fortunately I am close to Jl. Dhyana Pura which has a few internet cafes. A couple are 250rp per minute and the one I’m in now (the orange colored place across from Bestest Cafe) is 300rp per minute. Speed is decent as is the hardware.

Bali weather of late has been cloudy with evening and afternoon showers, not exactly holiday weather. The ultra violet is still high though and you’ll get a tan just walking around. My new shades are coming in very handy, as has the new umbrella.

One of the strange things that keeps happening, is two dudes keep showing up at my house at night. A few days ago around 8pm someone was standing outside saying “permisi, permisi”. I shout “Who’s there?” and get no reply. Two days ago at 8pm I was out and Ika was upstairs taking a nap. She left the front door open and heard these two guys in the garden, they left when she got down there. Last night they showed up again and knocked on the door. Ika and I were out and Ningrum answered, she said they ‘looked scary, like gangsters.’ Maybe they are frustrated bloggers looking for some website advice.

And when exactly do you intend to find out who these guys are and what they want,Nick? My plan of action would be to invite a couple of my biggest, brawniest mates around, explain the situation and confront these guys asap.
The thoughts of Ika going down to investigate sends shudders through me–what if they hadn’t gone away?
Cheers Laurs

Yeah, Ika often doesn’t think too much about what the consequenses are.

If I see them again I’ll find out where they are hosting, what kind of personal publishing software they are using, and if their system is configured correctly.

If they show up at all again its trouble, because Ningrum talked to them and told them their bogus friend, who they were supposedly looking for didn’t live there.

G’Day Nick,

Next time these dudes turn up, you should make sure Palu is there!.

Did Palu finally give his child a name?

Since my last message we had another visit from someone looking for Ibu so and so, while I was out.

Here’s what I think is going on. At the back of our house is an alley which is next to forest and rice fields. There is also construction and twice a day bunches of Javanese guys walk though past my gang. I think they are scoping out my place, trying to figure out when no one is in.

Today it was an older guy looking for ‘Ibu Sri’. In my 3 years in Bali I get people asking for directions about twice a year, now its been 4 times in a few days.

The lady 2 doors down from me had her bag snatched the other day.

Palu lives in Dreamland and isn’t around at night. His new daughter is Paulina Winny Waskiw.

If these guys show up again I’m giving them some attitude.

Might be wise to remember..you are the outsider here in Indonesia..
These guys may be smaller than you but they outnumber you 100 to one

Glad you are being careful Nick. The good thing about all this is you don’t have many valuables. If they ever make it in, they’ll be disappointed at your lack of western stuff. :)

Hi Nick,

Speak to the Banjar, they will sort these guys out for you.

The Banjar keep law and order in Bali not the Police. Yes they may ask for payment/a small donation but the police get paid from tax which is compulsory whether you need help or not.

seems reasonable to me!

Nick Dude,
Their motive sounded very fishy indeed. Have you alert the neighbours and Banjar/RT/RW? Hope you can finally rumble them.

It is true, I do not have many valuables. If I walked away with my laptop and camera, there wouldn’t be much else, except piles of old clothes.

Hi Nick,
absolutely, speak to the banjar. They will not like people loitering around the streets at anytime acting suspiciously. I know at Legian Kaja when thay have had outbreaks of crime the banjar organises patrols, manly at night, and the crime rate drops fairly fast.
Other idea could be get a couple of dogs.

What the heck is banjar? street gang? Why should anyone employ street gang to fight crime?
