Fawzee sms'd me the other day and said we should get together when I was in Singapore. He also asked me to bring him a bottle of Absolut raspberry, his favorite. In the Bali airport I sms'd him and told him what was on offer, raspberry wasn't one of them. He asked me to get the vodka at the airport in Singapore, as it was a lot cheaper. Arriving in Singapore I picked up his drink and a phone card to call him. I took the subway downtown. After taking a shower I called Fawzee. The time was approaching 9pm and he asked me to take a taxi to Bugis, a stop on the MRT. They have a big taxi line there and after a while he showed up with a couple of friends.
We agreed to sit outside and enjoy some Singapore food at a Chinese place in the area. We each got a bowl of clear soup, rice and shared a big plate of cucumber and roast chicken. Its good eats in this town and the cuisine includes a uniquely local combination of Chinese, Malay and sometimes Indian food. After that we strolled around the corner for a beer at a street-side place. Tiger beer is a light beer that is sold here and we ordered a few to share. Eating at a local food place and sharing a big Tiger beer is really my first thought when coming to Singapore. The food was about $15 Singapore and the beer $5.40 per bottle. Singaporeans love these open-air food places that are no frills, but serve great food. I saw plates advertised for $2-$3 also. Fawzee said that in Singapore, when you order a nasi campur (mixed rice ) you choose what is in it, unlike Bali. Its great to meet Fawzee again and in his environment he is a great guide. Singapore is modern, clean, totally uncorrupt and very safe for a visitor.
