Collecting my Business visa in record time I arranged to meet Fawzee and his girlfriend Siti downtown at Somerset station. They arrived around 2pm and we strolled around checking out the shopping and fancy shops. One place we passed was called House of Condom. It's a specialty shop with all kinds of colors, flavors, sizes, brands, you name it. Plenty of humor in there too, with a 4-condom birthday pack for your buddy. Each one of the birthday pack would fit your little finger, but they are in a plastic case and look so nice. I made a small purchase and we were on our way.
We trekked to a multi-storey shopping mall called Far East Plaza, which had a food court at the top. I had actually been here before to go to a Thai place and by chance Fawzee and Siti like a Muslim joint here. The place was called Puncak and is famous with locals for it noodles. Fawzee and Siti ordered a selection of items and I chose a dish called black pepper chicken. Most of the items on the menu ranged between $3-$4 Singapore. Fawzee said this place was halal, meaning the menu does not include pork and the meat has been killed according to Muslim tradition, which means with just 3 strokes of the knife and with a special prayer. There was a Muslim symbol on the wall, consisting of gold Arabic text on a black background to indicate this.
One of the waitresses, a large Singaporean, came over and talked loudly with a friend. In one sentence she used English, Malay and Hokien (the Chinese spoken in Singapore). "That's Singlish." said Fawzee. I think the Malay spoken here must be confusing for an Indonesian, because the accent really blurs some of the words. I am no expert but the Malay words feel like they have the 'edges worn off' when compared to Bahasa Indonesia.
