Living at the Eco Lodge is doable for people who have a certain degree of independence, although less convenient for people who have to be in Kuta everyday. The entire journey would take you probably 1.5-2 hours depending on traffic. Richard is building a music recording studio and has plans to create original music intertwining Balinese music and some western ideas. He has been very active at getting out into the surrounding villages and meeting musicians, learning about their instruments and their music. Jay and Richard told me that Balinese music is a real challenge for westerners to get a grasp of. It highly syncopated with many bangs and rattles going.
It doesn't fit well with western music, as Indian music would for example. When Richard eventually makes a CD I'll tell you all about it. Better still, when his website is done he will upload local Balinese music and explain it. I look forward to checking that out.
