The first time I visited the Eco Lodge last year, Richard's house was just a lot carved out of the side of a hill and a framework of grey cement beams. It seemed a long time away that anything resembling a house would be there. This time around everything is complete including washing machine, running water, furniture and decorations. Norm is an expert on water systems and his experience with the area and the people came in handy. Not being a land expert I don't know what the prices are in this area, but I will you that in Kuta / Seminyak you will pay upwards of 300m rp per ara (100m sq) and in less developed parts of Bali it can be 8m rp per ara.
If you are thinking of leasing land, or going through some clever legal way of 'buying it', be sure to talk to other expats who have done the same, as well as a lawyer and a reputable real estate company.
