Today Ika, Yenni and I took a taxi from my house in Seminyak to Warung Batavia in Kerobokan. The ride was only 5 minutes but under the scorching sun that can seem like a long walk. Around 9am I asked Ika and Yenni what they wanted for breakfast and Yenni said I like either nasi or rice, which we laughed at. No point in going to Café Moka as I was outnumbered 2-1. I suggested Warung Batavia and we delayed our departure for a brunch kind of time, realizing that Batavia is really set up for lunch. Arriving at 10.30am we were the only customers and the food was all untouched. I could see that Yenni, a Jakarta resident was immediately familiar with what was in front of her. We each got a plate of rice, the ladies going for nasi putih (white rice), myself nasi kuning (yellow rice colored with tumeric). Added to this were items of our choice. I chose anchovies and potatoes, plus fish soup with sour vegetables. The ensemble balanced out quite well.
Batavia (the former name for Jakarta) is really set up like a warung with long tables and an informal style. No worries about sitting along from a stranger. The place is popular with domestic tourists and expats alike. I asked Ika what she thought about the place and she said Mahal, which means expensive. For an Indonesian it is a bit expensive but after paying 50,000rp for all our food plus drinks I was not complaining.

Nick, hve you been to Ayam Goreng Nyonya Suharti and Gianyar Roast Pork in Denpasar? Im missing Indo food so badly. Thought I might go all my way to Denpasar if the food is good! Maybe Yenny or Ika could share some advice here. I would love to know as well if I could get ‘Creambath’ ala Rudy Hadisuwarno or Johnny Andrean or lulur ala Martha in Bali?
Cheers
Indon in Perth
Going in 3 weeks time…cant wait!!!
well, I’ve brought one whole chicken Suharti for Nick and Ika from Jakarta… ![]()
last time I’ve bought sate babi from mbok2 pinggir lapangan Renon….uenak tenannnnnn…..
at first, I didn’t feel tempted because it was look ‘plain’, only lontong and 10 stick of sate (3 small pieces of meat and fat)
but after the first bite….it was the most delicious sate babi I’ve ever had…the taste is very sweet and the meat is very tender!
yummmm….
about that special Indonesian ‘luxury’
I know places in Jakarta…for creambath, massage or waxing…
dunno in Bali…
Aahh..what a shame! I hate having to go to expensive hotel spa. A creambath for Rp 20,000 or a lulur for Rp 60,000 will be so much more realistic! Im staying at Nusa Dua this time, already paying too much for the hotel, cant really splurge any further.
Thanks for the ‘tips’. I will look out for Sate babi mbok2 lapangan Renon
Babi guling Bali enak nggak sih?
G’Day Nick,
We gotta go there when I return!. I like the style of the restoran as you described it - sharing long tables. Much akin to Made’s Warung eh.
Of course Ika would say it was expensive just as Candika would!. They’re Indonesians!!. Actually I thought it was reasonably priced for what you received.
