Internet access in Bali is one of the tricky things I have to deal with. For my first 2 years here I used internet cafés and 2 of my favourites are Internet Outpost on Poppies Lane II in Kuta and Global Xtreme on Jl. Raya Kerobokan in Kerobokan.
These 2 places are pretty good but there is no ideal internet café. What do I mean ideal? I mean new hardware with USB ports, large monitors, fast connection, affordable price, non-smoking and plenty of software.
You would not believe the jumping around I have had to do in the past when after typing an article and putting it onto a floppy disk or USB stick found I had a disk error or the place had no USB ports. Just the other day I went to the new internet café on Jl. Dhyana Pura. As I uploaded my article I tried to upload photos, only to find that their system was set to prevent my pop-up photos panel from operating. The neighboring internet café, Nusa Indah net does allow it, but has no USB ports. My solution was to email the photos to myself from my memory stick, then log off, go to Nusa Indah, download them from my mail and upload them to the site. A lot of screwing around for a few photos!
I do not have a phone line in my house so have not yet sampled the delights of home dial-up which I know from mom & pop internet cafés to be awful. A new company has arrived in Bali called Blueline. It is a wireless connection promising 128 kbps for each user and the billing is calculated by how much data you suck / blow through the pipe, not hours a month.
They are located in Kuta Galeria at the bottom of the Sunset Rd amid an ever increasing array of new shops opening. When I called them before Nyepi they sent a technician out to check the viability of my connection. Blueline uses a booster from the top of AJ Hackett’s bungy tower in Legian and the route to my roof needs to be an uninterrupted straight line. Everything looked fine and yesterday 2 guy came over for about an hour to fix an antenna to my lightning rod (sounds painful!).
Anyway I am online at home now and those late night dashes to the internet café will become less frequent. The connection is not ultra quick but it’s okay for Bali.
If you need to speak to the main man at Blueline ask for Gustave and tell him Nick from Bali Blog sent you.

I will recommend another ISP, Global Xtreme in Kerobokan. They, of course, offer a slightly different range of solutions and the main man there is Hengky.
Blueline works by giving me a certain amount of credit, like pulsa for the phone which I must pay for (in my case 750,000rp worth) and it gets deducted just like pulsa. I had to pay 2.5m rp for the installation, 250,000rp per month and 10% tax. So I have my connection and it works.
Just 30 meters from Blueline in Kuta Galleria is a little warung place that does Indonesian food, specializing in ayam goreng (fried chicken). I did not catch the name of the place but there was something about Jakarta in it. Anyway I got a chunk or fried beef, chicken and lalapan (raw vegetables). Indonesians usually eat lalapan with hot sambal, which I did and throw on some kecup manis (sweet soy sauce) on the rice. An iced tea helped everything along. The bill was 23,000rp.

Woo hoo! Nick, congrats on the internet connection at home.
I know 128 kb is a lot for Bali. I was so happy when I got 256 kb via satellite, (shared with 10) others in Ubud, as typically it’s a 14.4 shared with many.
Makes me feel absolutely spoiled with my residential 5 mb cable modem connection here. I may consider hanging around your drive way next time to steal bandwidth. ![]()
Sorry to hear about your Papaya tree. Maybe a sturdier Rambutan tree is in order.
Ika looks absolutely FANTASTIC. The tummy is coming along nicely, so don’t be to harsh with her on that Papaya thing.
Best
Chris

G’Day Nick,
Excellent info on the internet service. I’ve often wondered about that in Bali because in Java it is soooo expensive to have a connection at home.
Hope your ‘rod’ is feeling better (He, he…!)
