Expensive pre-school in Bali

Schools are a subject most of us have forgotten about. That is until we have kids, then school are all of a sudden in the picture again. This morning Ika’s friend Ayu, from Kalimantan came over. Ayu has 2 young daughters, her husband being from Spain.

Ayu’s daughters are 6 years old and she, said looking for a good pre-school was hard. Ayu checked out 15 schools to find a good one and one that was affordable. She chose one that caters to mixed kids (parents Indo / bule), and said she pays 34m rp a year to cover both of them. That’s a chunk of change alright.

Schools that cater to western / campur kids, know they cn charge a pretty penny. Most western parents do not like the standard of Indonesian locals chools and will pay the cash if they have it. Ayu said in hindsight, its probably better to just let the kid play at home with other kids. After all, even though the pre-school has books, forms and a curiculum, the kids still wet themsleves in the middle of the floor.

One advantage for Jevon playing with the local kids, is that he’ll learn Balinese, to add to the Javanese / Indonesian, his mother teaches him.

Jezzuz Nick!

That’s about 3800 Yankee dollars. Even on an American salary that’s a tough pill to swallow. Especially now with gas prices what they are.

Well they better feed the kids five star gourmet food at the prices they are charging!

I agree with you that anything to do with ‘bule’ will get charge more anywhere in Indo, unfortunately. For some reasons, they thought that ‘bule’ has tons of $$$, which is not always true. They watched too many american movies with all the celebs, and forgot that there are common people exist as well.

We have our son in a private school here in US. We pay just under $7000/yr for 3 short days. It is not cheap, but there are many options out there. What it comes with the price is the quality you believe in it. That’s my two cents.

But, I think if y’all want to look around at local school in Indo, there are many good ones. All I know is schools in Java (big cities). Starts at elementary all the way to college. Those are good ones and it is very competitive and though to get in. Yes, it’s all based on test score not how much money you could put in. But, it’s worth the sweat. Oh, did I say that it’s way cheaper too? :-)

IDR34Mio/year is outrageous Nick!

If you don’t like local schools standard that’s fine. Many Indonesian people (including me) also dont trust the quality of local schools run by the state.

But there are also many good private schools especially owned by chatolic / christian foundations. They charge higher school fee than state schools but worth the money. I dont know about Bali though, do they have chatolic schools, considering Hindu is the majority there.

Hey Indo gal.

I live down the coast from you. I’m in Belmont Shore Long Beach just off P.C.H. Funny how the same street runs through both our cities!

But anyways, I have to agree with you about Private schools. Although academicaly kids from privates don’t always do better than kids in public system, they always seem to be much much more discplined and emotionally well adjusted than thier public counterparts.
