Sunday morning an Australian friend of mine stopped by to say hello and meet Ika. He is currently living in the mountains just below Mt. Batukaru and is building a house.
He told me a whole micro expat scene is developing up there with people building houses and I am excited to check out some of the arts and music that is going on up there. For an expat living in the boonies it's a give and take situation, you get a first hand look at village life and close interaction with locals, but you forgo the easy access to creature comforts. My friend has a 90 minute drive to get home from Kuta, I wouldn't fancy that everyday.
Another thing that some people have to come to grips with is how to make a living. Most of the money here in Bali is in the tourist and expat scene, and that is centered around the Kuta/Legian/Seminyak area. There are other places for sure but that's the main scene. For someone without capital looking to work in Bali being in that area is probably your best chance of getting customers.
Bali is a very interesting place though and the expat scene is varied. You can find people who are into healing arts, architecture, water sports or who have great little hotels tucked away in the middle of nowhere. The internet and proper use of it allows some of these people to remain in their location of choice and still attract customers. If I was one of those people I would advertise on Baliblog and have access to all our readers, a great way to promote your business!

Hi, Nick ..
I have land in Jati Luwih near the area you mentioned. It’s about 200 are- it is beautiful- cascading ricefields on two sides of a sloping valley with a river cutting through the property and its own private hot spring! I can take you there for a picnic some weekend, just tell me and we can arrange that.
Cheers ….
