A while later the place is closing up and the Balinese guys say to Fred, "You're not leaving until he apologizes to you, you're our friend and he can't treat you like that." Fred said not to make a big deal about it but they were adamant.
By this time the owner was pretty drunk and the Balinese said to him "Why don't we all discuss it down on the beach?" and like a fool the guy goes down there and sits down next to about 6 of them. Fred said a call was made and a SUV showed up with another 4 guys, including a huge Balinese guy they call 'the finisher' because he finishes all fights. Fred said he was told to stay in the bar and once in a while come down to the beach and listen to what was going on. Fred said this fool was still telling everyone what a big man he was and how he can do anything he wants. He said that the Balinese were sitting back letting him dig his own grave, they wanted to enjoy it. When they are going to stomp somebody they want to prolong the process.
Finally about 2-am one guy said to Fred "What do you want to do? Do you want us to beat him or do you want to help him?" Fred said he preferred to let the guy go and his Balinese friend said, "Okay but he must apologize." Fred went down to the beach and was told to sit next to the guy and explain that this was his last chance to apologize. Fred said the guy was still loud-mouthing it, so he put his arm around the guy and said "Do you realize what a world of fucking trouble you are in right now?" "Just say your sorry and make it sound believable." The guy stood up and it seemed like a light bulb went off in his head. He hugs Fred and starts going on about being good friends etc.
The end of the story was Fred got home at 3am thinking, "Man I just don't need this BS." Lucky for the other guy that Fred didn't take the easy route. When you have Balinese friends they will often stick up for you, when its another foreigner involved.

As he was telling the story I was wincing inside, thinking of this guy going down to the beach after dark with a bunch of Balinese, who want to kick his ass> Very dangerous and he’s lucky they gave him a second chance.

I agree–who needs this BS?
Take the back door out fercrissakes, don’t get involved in this “foreigner trying to understand locals” crapola.
WALK AWAY.
Well lucky for him…
I know of persons that have not gotten off so lightly!
Not all bad after all, 1st your friend did the right thing, cause letting him have it wouldn’t take him anywhere, and finally the other guy got some sense and managed to escape a rough fight. Perhaps when he sobered up he realised 100% how lucky he… or perhaps not…
