Cat & Fiddle pub: Sanur Bali

pub051905.jpgThe Cat & Fiddle pub in Sanur can be considered the last bastion of British culture in Bali. Seminyak is Euro central with Italian and French restaurants, pizza parlors and Greek places. Well there is a fish & chips joint on Jl. Oberoi but British food is not tops on any menu. The Cat & Fiddle serves an assortment of Engligh and Irish favorites including Irish Bangers and mash ( 38,000rp), Fish & Chips (28,000rp ) and Mixed Grill (68,000rp). The menu is divided up into categories which are: International Breakfast, Sandwiches & Snacks, Starters, Main courses, Desserts.

The Cat & Fiddle opened in March 2003 and is owned and operated by British Honorary Consul Mark Wilson, a native of Lancashire. Mark plays guitar and sings on Tuesday nights so you might like to stop by and have a chat, over a cold Guinness. I stopped by on a Thursday night and had a pint of Storm Brewings new amber ale. Storm Brewing is Indonesias first microbrewery. While I was enjoying my amber ale and hearty fish & chips a large man wearing a Muslim pecis (hat) arrived by motorbike. He was from Sumatra and was the entertainment for the evening. A pretty good guitar player but needs to review his lyrics before the show (Are you going to Saborough Fare, parsley, sage, rosemely and dime).

All in all the Cat & Fiddle is a decent place with pleasant female staff. The pub is located at the southern end of Jl. Danua Tamblingan on Jl. Cemara.

Hi Nick,

Regarding song lyrics, reminds me of one time we were sitting in a restaurant [not the Cat and Fiddle]. They had a very good band and I was singing along and tapping my feet, so they invited me up to sing with them.

They had many pages of song lyrics in English, but none of the words made any sense. Apparently they just listen to the songs sung in English [in its many dialects etc] and do the best they can in interpreting it.

Just imagine how we would go trying to make sense of a song sung in a language we were only partially familiar with.
