Down the street at Malibu we sat at the bar and met 2 Dutch expats (real expats), a married couple who have been in Bali 10 months and who own property on the outskirts of town. We were joined at the bar by a German guy who works in the tourist industry in Candi Dasa. To me this whole scene, with the cool Balinese guys behind the bar was a microcosm of Bali expats.
The Dutch husband was going on about Bali being paradise and announced 'The Balinese are so naive.' right in front of the bartenders. The German guy was shaking his head, obviously a person who has been around for a while. The Dutch guy's wife leans over and says to me "We always have trouble with them (Germans), they can be arrogant." Chris and I had a good laugh about it later. Sitting at the next table was the Scottish guy who plans to relocate to Bali and dig up BSA motorbikes. It's a motley crew you find in the expat scene, with opinions, attitudes and ways of doing things all colliding at different angles.
