When I usually do visa runs they are in the early morning when the airport is just getting started. During the day all the airport shops are open which really makes the place seem like a bigger place. There are two sections of baggage check in for international departures, to the left and right downstairs. There are also toilets there. Upstairs you pay your 100,000rp departure tax and then pass through immigration. If you lose your departure tag, slip the guy 20,000rp. I was over my visa by 1 day, meaning I would have to pay $20. My passport has so many stamps and extensions in it the poor guy couldn't figure out when I came in so overlooked that.
The small duty free section is across from the immigration desks and they stock the usual liquors including Absolute Vodka for $18 and Absolute Citron for $22. Fawzee in Singapore had asked me to pick up a bottle of Absolut Raspberry for him. They didn't have it here so I was sms'ing him to see what other flavour he wanted. Fawzee said get it in Singapore as it cheaper. I knew once I left Bali my phone would not work, but the clock was handy.
At Ngurah Rai airport flights are announced in Bahasa Indonesia and English. The airport is fairly small so if you make a wrong turn its no problem. The airport bookstore is pretty good and sells a wide variety of books on Bali and Indonesia, including Island of Bali, LP Bali and Lombok and Island of Java. The prices are actually cheaper than downtown bookstores.
Bali airport is refered to as Denpasar, even though its in Tuban. The airport code is DPS and the actual name is Ngurah Rai. International and domestic flights are handled from here.
