Ika, Jevon and I have just returned from a hole in the wall Indonesian place in Seminyak serving ayam bakar (roast chicken). Its really amazing what little places are tucked away and how there is a parallel universe in Bali, one foreign and one local.
Seminyak nighltife features restaurants from all over the world and often at a good price. If you choose to go a bit fancy though, get ready for the check! I can easily spend 50,000rp on myself with food and a drink. Locals of course don’t do that and look for hole in the wall warungs similar to the ones on Jl. Drupadi in Seminyak, where you can get a big packet of nasi bunkus (take away rice, veg and meat) for 4,000rp.
Ika and Ningrum were given a choice of where they wanted to eat, and chose a place I had never been to. Located in the gang across Jl. Seminyak from Jl. Dhyana Pura, it was about 100 meters down on the right side. Low tables and almost no decor set the scene, a couple of local people were already enjoying their food. Ningrum went over and checked out the prices, gleefully telling us she was heads up on any attempt to jack our bill up. I ordered a hot tea, plus chicken breast, which came in a bbq kind of sauce, small plate of raw vegetables which is the norm, hot sambal and a bowl of rice. Ika’s mother got the same, while Ika and Ningrum ordered grilled fish in sauce. We also got a plate of tofu, tempe and stuffed capsicum, with more raw veg. The ladies all got a juice.
By the end I was full and was delighted that the bill was only 52,000rp. Fancy taking 3 of your relatives out for food and drinks, that were all good, for US$5.20!!! Of course 99% of tourists won’t go to this kind of place. If you feel adventurous and want good food for little money check this place out.
