Seminyak is home to many fine restaurants but in my opinion you cannot beat a good nasi padang. Nasi padang is the style of food originating in Sumatra, where the food is piled up in the window on plates. You get a plate of rice and then choose the items you want. In Sumatra everything has a heavy does of chili but here in Bali its more palatable.
Ika and I go to one at the top end of Jl. Seminyak called Pondok Dua. I actually introduced her to it and she likes it. This evening I ordered 2 chunks of tuna, 1 piece of chicken, 2 kinds of vegetable and rice with a semi-spicy sauce. Ika got a various animal parts, vegetables and a string of shrimp to go with her rice. She also ordered an iced tea.
The other customers were all Indonesian, Balinese and Javanese and I think the place is actually muslim. We got a little finger bowl along with our food as its customary to pick at your food or even eat totally with fingers. It took me only 5 minutes to finish and my food was delicious. The bill was 25,000rp for both of us which is okay. I reckon $3.50 to take my wife out is something I can accommodate.
Give a padang place a try if you are in Bali.

Nick,
If you & the mrs. really like makanan padang, you guys should visit “Natrabu” in Sanur. The best Padang cuisine in Bali. It’s going to cost more than the food at your neigborhood warungs, but it’s well worth it. Here’s the address:
“Natrabu”
Jalan Bypass Ngurah Rai No. 43, Sanur
