What I did today in Seminyak Bali

Today was another beautiful example of what Bali can offer as far as weather, with sunny skies and very pleasant temperatures.

I was sitting in my porch with the laptop working on some photos for Seraya Shores. One thing that put the breaks on my movements was a stomach ache and case of the runs. Maybe the tuak had a lingering effect I don’t know. Out here in the tropics you get little stomach bugs and ailments for no apparent reason then you’re fine.

Checking the national news here’s a case of shooting the messenger so to speak. I guess speaking for the wrong side can get you in trouble over here.

I remember when I was living in Eugene Oregon we used to have an independent cinema The Bijou Arts Cinema. I used to go once in a while on the lookout for cool movies usually from overseas that wouldn’t make it to the big screen elsewhere. There is a documentary movie going around right now that might make its way to your neighborhood sometime in the next year about the aftermath of the Bali bombing. Its called Bali: Hope in Paradise. I am definitely seeing it when it opens out here and will report my thoughts.

While I was ’sakit’ today cleaner Putu came around and did her thing. She always brings her young son Kadek who gingerly comes over and peeks at my computer. Last time I gave gave Putu a large Bintang for her ’suami’ back home. Wonder what I can give her?

Baliblog will shortly be working with a new surfboard brand called Pacifica which I am excited to introduce to everyone. The company is owned by Dave a 50 year old American and focuses on the beginning to mid range of the market. As you might of noticed the Palu folks aren’t working with us anymore because of other business factors but I’m all good with them. In fact Palu said to me the other day “Hey champ when are you coming over for happy hour.” “What day is happy hour?” I said. “Everyday.” he replied.

Here’s a bit of gossip for all the people thinking of buying land in Bali. While I was out in Karangasem staying at Seraya Shores owner Jamie told me his buddy from Australia who owns a guest house in Balangan on the Bukit is in line to lose his property. Reason is the ‘Tomy Suharto’ project at Dreamland is going to be taken over by the government (it now has locals running the show at the entrance). The locals were originally displaced by Suharto, grabbed it back after his removal now the government want to carry on developing that prime real estate. Dreamland is probably the best beach in Bali and there are plans to put a marina at Balangan.

The deal in Indonesia is that technically you are not alllowed to build within 100 yards of the beach, which puts a lot of people at risk if the government decides to act. Apparently in Balangan they are playing their cards. Jamie said some of the warung owners at Balangan are pulling up their places and salvaging what they can before it gets bulldozed.

We’ll wait and see how things turn out. I hope the local people and the environment are put as top priorities.

G’Day Nick,

Salak generally is a good cure for the runs. As for your stomach aches, rub some Chinese oil on your lower stomach area (not too low though because it can burn appendages!).

I meant to ask you this in my last post mate. Is the coast road from Pabean to Kusamba completed yet?.

Hi Nick
Hope the tummy (and other bits) are feeing better. Hey sorry to bother you but I’ve heard there is to be a concert at the Hard Rock with a couple of Aussie entertainers, Mark Seymour (formerly of Hunters & Collectors) and James Reyne (ex Australian Crawl) being billed as “Rockin in Paradise”
Can’t find any info on the net and we’re coming over soon. If you happen to know anything, dates would be handy…..
Thanks and take care
Di

Hi Nick,
First time here & what a treat it is,so much info but I find I get very sad (and cold) thinking about lovely Bali.
I have spent much time in Bali yet have never been ill EXCEPT after drinking tuak (that happened twice so its a pretty good indicator that its the tuak!)Funnily enough I have never got sick from the arak nor the warungs & rombongs I always eat off.
Love your work dude :) Cinta dan Damai,
Michelle
