Beautiful sunshine and bearable temperatures greeted Chris today and after our breakfast at the beach and a little surfing Baliblog style we cruised down Jalan Legian on my motorbike taking extra special care to pay attention to the traffic and moderate our speed.
We arrived on Poppies II outside Internet Outpost and as we pulled up Barrie and Chandika were buying ice cream from the place opposite. Its Chandika’s birthday today so I think we’ll celebrate with a nasi goreng, that’s the plan anyway.
I showed Chris the place I spend a lot of my time and shortly after we were joined by Josh. Pretty cool little gathering.
I showed Chris another internet café for him to compare and then we walked down the road to a DVD store. We didn’t buy anything but its fun to check out the latest pirate releases and see how much Bill Gate’s empire is going for on the black market.
I suggested we take a stroll down Jl. Legian around Jl. Pantai Kuta to the beach. A whole selection of nick nack stores line the route and we stopped into Barrie’s hotel, Prawita on lower Jl. Legian. This place has an interesting layout with a centrally located lobby and roof, many ponds and an abundant of greenery. By the way we did pass by the pool and did observe 2 groups enjoying themselves, the 4 Italian guys were relaxing in their Speedo’s and the other 2 guys were splashing around with their local female companions.
Rounding the bend at the bottom of Jl. Legian the sun was beating down and I wished I remembered to bring my hat.
Made’s Warung was doing a fine trade and I observed a variety of Euro, Asian and Indonesian customers.
Reaching the beach we walked over the road and strolled along under partial shade from the trees. I joked with Chris that it would take about 20 seconds before he was offered a massage…..it was about 20 seconds. We were also offered shorts and t-shirts. This can be annoying for a visitor for sure especially one new to Asia.
After about 10 minutes we saw a large group on Balinese sitting under the trees with a gamelan orchestra beating out a tradition rhythm. This is the build up to Galungan which starts next week. I commented that I really like the outgoing nature of the Balinese culture, the fact that it is musical, colorful and demonstrative.
Sitting at a warung on the corner of Jl.Benesari and Poppies II we saw this lady selling small items of food. We downed a cool watermelon juice and after grabbing our helmets rode home up Pantai Kuta and Jl. Legian.

Hi there Nick!
We are two girls coming to Bali for 3 weeks in August. We read your posts every day, because they are funny and very useful for us, since we have never been to Bali before. So please keep up that really good work, it is greatly appreciated and cheered for!
We just have one more favour to ask.
Could you please ask Josh how long he’ll be in Bali? We both think he’s very cute and we’d love to go out some time in Kuta this summer…
Greetz,

hey there,
i am an american planning on visiting bali in july/aug and am a bit concerned with the state of the world. are there many americans there right now? and if so what is the feeling towards them?
thanks,
mike
Ladies, nice to hear from you. You’ll all have a blast when you get here, it great.
Won’t Josh be happy to read this post. Chris and I met him a couple of nights ago and he was trying hard to convince other ladies he was cute. He’s heading to Sumbawa soon but will be back, don’t think he’ll be here in August.
Mike. There are some Americans here although most of the foreignors seems to be European and Japanese right now. The atmosphere in Bali is peaceful and people are friendly, I know the news can make Indonesia seem like a terrorist hotbed.
Mike, I just heard from Barrie (who’s staying here in Bali) that the US, Oz, the UK and another country have raised their travel advisory warnings for Indonesia right now, no doubt due to the rebel Aceh activity.
Bali is a world away from that. There aren’t a ton of Americans right now, as Nick said. But that should be more of a reason for coming! ![]()
Mike & everybody else coming to Bali,
Bali IS very safe and absolutely beautiful. You will have no problems. The Government travel warnings from the various countries are in fact standard procedure so that their butts are covered.
COME ON OVER TO PARADISE!!.
I get the latest up dates of Travel Warnings sent to me by the Gov.
Just so you know I have not had one from Indonesia for a few weeks, but I have had them for America & Australia… Well I am here living in Australia, so I guess I am less safe here than in Bali, Mike that would be the same for you as USA have new Travel warnings, telling us Aussies not to come there. So I guess it is a risk we take daily anyway, I know where I’d rather be…. Relaxing with my hubby & friends & a crate of Bintang at our feet in Paradise, watching our daughter playing in the beach… Who wouldn’t??
I am there. see you soon, but never soon enough!
I’d like to add my own travel warning.
Bali Indonesia.
If you go there you could find:
1.Friendly people
2.Great culture
3.Array of lovely food
4.Perfect weather right now
5.Amazing scenery.
If you don’t come now but wait until the other travel advisories are lifted in a year or 2 the tourists will be back and this unique opportunity to explore Bali without the crowds will be gone.
Hi,
Looking forward to Bali holiday in July, my husband and I are Aussie first timers, so read you comments with interest. The culture, food, weather, and shopping sound great can’t wait.
Robyn
Thinking about coming to Bali for the Chuseok holidays from Seoul…and I’m certain of my safety in Bali. What about Jakarta? I have to go through the airport there to get to Bali, and I’ve heard Jakarta is so dangerous for foreigners that most people have private bodyguards. Is this a concern.
Maybe I’m paranoid. It certainly seems like the press has made Korea out to be a nightmare, and it hasn’t been. I’m just eager for a great vacation, and don’t want any hitches. Comments?
