Tuesday morning I decided to make a trip to the criminal court in Denpasar to check out the latest on the Bali Nine. I live in Seminyak and there are a couple of ways I can get there. I chose the Sunset Rd, down to Jl. Imam Bonjol, then headed towards Denpasar. At Jl. Teuku Umur I headed round the one-way system to Jl. P.D Sudirman. Parking outside on the street, I walked through the open front gates of the courthouse and through a metal detector. The whole atmosphere was very relaxed and I wondered for a moment if the proceedings were cancelled.
Today is the day when the first of the Bali Nine, young Michael Czugaj, with learn of the prosecution’s sentencing demands. Strolling through to the area next to the courtrooms, I came to a small media scrum round the cell. Michael was inside with Bali Nine enforcer Myuran Sukumaran and a bunch of Indonesians. To get this far I didn’t need to show ID and wasn’t searched.
The 2 cops guarding the cell looked bored out of their minds and the press corps was making frantic calls to their respective newsrooms. I briefly chatted to a young lady from Aceh helping out on the of Austrlalain news organisations. We chatted about the possible sentencing and she told me that maybe the Bali Nine could be transfered back to Australia in future. She said in her opinion this agreement would not be in place for another 5 years. I asked her if the convicted Australians should be given ‘local sentencing guidelines’ when they get home, meaning, if they get ‘life’ should that be 15 years. She said she did not think that was fair at all. The prisoner transfer agreement has not been signed yet.

These ” Kids ” as you call them are hardly infants.
They are in fact young adults and should and will be held responsible for thier illegal actions.
Regarding drug smugglers, Indonesia, Singapore and indeed most of Asia has spectacular penalties for such.
Empathetic, weak, citizens of decaying western societies should be re-thinking their own values instead of blaming hypocritical politicians and slandering other countries cultures.
How disgusting for Indonesia. They jail people for two years for bombing and killing people and they kill people for drug offenses. I don’t need to hear about the victims of the Bali 9. No one forces them to stick a needle in their arm. What a horrible country Indonesia is. Who would ever vacation there?
its not that us westereners dont think drug smugglers shouldnt be punished , they should be but the life of the young man taken in singapore recently showed that no mercy was given to him after he repented and wanted to change his ways..isnt that what jail is all about..to reform the person…none of us are God and we have no right to take anyones life but give them the chance to redeem them selves…is hanging, firing squad or any other form of punishment stopping the drugs and its dealers…the answer is NO…i think when the rest of the world sees the actual drug lords and the likes punished as well , we might then respect the laws of asian countries…life is cheap to a lot of countries and to me saving one life , even a drug dealers is more humane then simply murdering them…when God himself comes down and says, yes, you may kill…then ok..until then..murder is murder no matter what guise or excuse people will use…i hope the people who make these decisions to take another humans life wont suffer in the next life but somehow i think they will also pay.
Sorry Ruby. Who said we only jailed bombers two years in prison? Thats a total lie! We sentenced them to death (Amrozi, Imam Samudra etc). Thats the right punishment for people who take other people’s life. Drugs traffickers are also terrorist. They take other people’s life too.
Hi im not sure if you can help me but im really interested in writing a letter to scott rush in denpasar jail. do you no where i could send the letter to so he will get it??
And just reading Komang’s piece where he said that drug trafficers take other peoples lives… that is complete rubbish the person who takes the drug is responsible for there own actions.
Theey choose to do that!
Elise, you are being VERY naive. Drug traffickers are killers and should be dealt with as such. In many cases jail is too good for them. The death penalty is a much better option.
Elise, I think he has gone out of business
I cannot believe what is going on over there this government wants to pull there heads in what if it were Howards child, would he then say respect that countrys law. I am sorry every time i think of these kids i feel sick for them and there familys. Who can
sit back and be freinds with a country that allows terrorists out of jail and judges drug trafficers. i bet all those maimed and killed by there hands wish they had a choice of drug trafficers or terroorists i know who i would take my chances with. Indonesia I beg and pray for the lives of these kids, Rethink your values.
