Visiting Schapelle Corby in Kerobokan jail Bali - part II

Bob said most people sleep on the floor of their cell. His sleeps 6 people and is a tight fit. I asked why they did not use bunk beds. "Its very tight in there." said Bob. "In other countries they use vertical space in tight rooms and bunk beds work pretty well." I said. "No man, that has not happened here yet," he said, "though you can pay for a mattress." Bob said he was a shipbuilder and passed his time building replica boats using just raw materials fetched by guards for a price from the outside. He also told me he has a boat in Hong Kong he needs to sell when he gets out. "I have got a lot of people I need to pay." he said. Looking around at the casual way in which the inmates and staff were strolling around I said, "Its kind of funny in here." "Yeah, Bob said, funny until you realize its no joke. They pass down sentences in years that should be months. I am really mad at them the way they screw up peoples lives."

Looking around I saw the French woman and her skinny son. "So what is that guys deal?" I said. "They caught him with 4 pounds of hashish. Twenty five years he got. Twenty five fuckin' years, his life is screwed." Apparently his mother moved out to Bali to visit him everyday. Their lives will now be inextricably linked by Kerobokan jail. Seeing other western men walking around, some older guys who dressed like they were on their way to Fabios for lunch, I asked Bob about them. "See that guy?" he said. "He got 7 years for possession and had already done the same amount as me."

"So if nobody visits you and you have to arrange your own food in here, what is it like long term?" I asked. "Its like being on a 5-year camping trip, downtown with no money." he said.

As I was talking to Bob I saw the Australian Consul appear and knew he must be there because of Schapelle Corby. Just behind him Schapelle appeared in a light blue shirt. As he left and she started to move away I jumped up and shouted, "Schapelle!" She came back and I said, "Look you do not know me, but I do a travel website on Bali that people read all over the world. Can I ask you some questions?" She said that because of the upcoming verdict on the 27th she could not really give me any info on what was going on. I said, "But people are interested in your mental state, how you are holding up." She said she was holding up okay and when I told her that the front door guards and the media were saying she was not accepting visitors, she said do not believe everything you read in the press. She would like visitors but her council advised her not to say anything before the verdict. Schapelle said there is no tennis court at Kerobokan as was reported in some newspaper and when I asked her about the lack of daylight / darkness she said she has gotten used to the fluorescent light being on the whole time. The press likes to exaggerate everything and one source said she had not seen the light of day for 6 months. When I saw her she looked tanned, more tanned than me. As she left I said that if I come back and ask for a visit for her to remember I was Nick from Baliblog.

Schapelles attitude was quite positive and I felt she had the impression that it would all be wrapped up on the 27th. I was actually thinking that her sentence would start then, but maybe she knows something I do not. It is no secret the Australian government has been working for a prisoner exchange and if she is found guilty will probably be shipped home fairly soon.

After Schapelle left I go back with Bob and we started talking about Solutions to problems. I asked him what a Solution would cost. Basically if Starsky & Hutch apprehend you on the street with some Special Cabbage or some Scooby Snacks you had better get 20Gs to their head-honcho fast. If things move past that stage you are in trouble. "The trouble is some of these backpackers think you can get off with 2-3Gs, but that is not the way it works." he said.

When visiting time was up I gave Bob 100,000rp and wished him luck. He says he will not be coming back to Indonesia and I can understand that sentiment. Personally I have absolutely no interest in messing with drugs in this country. They really will lock you up and chuck away the key. Once you are inside you become a cow to be milked so nobody is going to be in a hurry to get you out. I hope this look inside a jail is enough to make any would be drug-partier quit for the duration of their visit.

I also hope things work out for Schapelle.

Great story, love your insight and pragmatic approach to this type of situation. I’m an Aussie who has been travelling to Bali for over 30 years and understand both sides of the fence.

Great job Nick! You crafty investigative guy you! You actually got in and got what you were looking for, even though it is brief.

If you’re ever tired of doing the Blog, (hope never!) you can apply at W5 or 60 minutes.

It takes guts.

So are the women segregated from the men at lockup? I suppose you didn’t see the actual cells and holding areas.

Why do you hope things work out for Schapelle given that she brought in drugs to Indonesia? And why do you think she should be given special treatment while less glamorous drug traffickers from Aus and elsewhere are left to rot in Indonesian jails?

I am not saying whether I think Schapelle is innocent or guilty, but she is a person just like you and me and I hope things get better for her. I hope things get better for Bob, I gave him 100,000rp because he does not have the whole of Australia looking after him. Given the situation most of the inmates have I hope they can move on and lead good lives afterwards. The whole system of prisons seems like a huge waste in general. You have ignorant people telling other ignorant people what to do. There is not much creative learning going on.

It has to be said that all the people inside did something that made it possible. The Bali Nine did make a series of choices (not just 1 ) that led to their capture. I will refrain from commenting on Schapelle’s case till its decided.

The French guy is Michaël Blanc. His site is at: http://www.michael-blanc.com/

His mother sounds like a remarkable person. Hats off to her. See: http://tinyurl.com/9vrjz

I wonder if the French reacted at Bali like the Australians are doing now, and what good that did.

Nick,
Great work! Your article should be printed out and given to everyone along with their plane ticket to Bali. Plenty of time to have a good read and provided their brain cells aren’t already too fried, comprehend the message.

For all the bleeding hearts out there - If you treat a foreign countries laws and customs (corrupt or otherwise) with contempt, then expect to pay the consequences.

Tanned I am not. It is kind of funny that after 6 supposed months without seeing sunlight Schapelle Corby has a better tan than me! But really she did look quite tanned, I was surprised and the good thing is her outlook seems positive.

I may visit Bob again although I don’t want to develop too much of a relationship with him. He’s in stir and will latch onto anyone who comes along. I’m not into being someones crutch. Sounds tough but that’s life baby.

Nick, if the system is so corrupted and cruel, is there any risk that any traveller can be a target from someone when embarking to Indonesia? Like, anyone is a potential “cow to be milked” even if he/she has never seen any type of drug. It’s kind of scary to think about stepping into a country like that. Am I being too biassed or there’s a real danger?

Hermann I think if you stay out of trouble you will have no problems. I don’t anyone is trying to snare regular people, its just when you deliberately cross hte line, eg. buying drugs for personal consumpation that things change.

I have been following the Schapelle case for over 6 months now. The only way that i can follow up on that story is by checking on the web. MSNBC, CNN or any american station does not report of any recent findings of the case. I myself am a single female the same age as Schapelle Corby, but I live in the state of Indiana,USA. I’m outraged that a very weak and desolate government must make an example out of one single person. They are truly showing how indecent and inhumane people of their country can be. Ban her from the country, set her bail @ $500 (as they would in the U.S.), and at the worst sentence her to one month in prison. But to order her to death by firing squad, 12 barbaric men firing pistols at her, is just as horrible as the barbarians over in Iraq sawing the heads of American civilians and our American troops. I say we put their judicial system in front of the firing squad. As for Bob, I definetly do not blame u for never wanting to return!! Hope I have not offended anyone, except for the ones intended.

I wonder what would be everyones reaction if a foreigner turned up in Australia with a case full of drugs and proclaimed “I didn’t put it there”?

WOuld the same bleeding hearts be screaming out he/she is innocent?

Karl - what you’re missing in your analogy is that in Australia, you’d be presumed innocent until proven guilty. It’s vice versa in Indonesia.

Nick - you made this comment:

“Hermann I think if you stay out of trouble you will have no problems. I don’t anyone is trying to snare regular people, its just when you deliberately cross hte line, eg. buying drugs for personal consumpation that things change.”

I don’t know how many times at various night clubs in bali i’ve been offered ‘weed’ or ‘ecstacy’ - probably by fake drug dealers aka cops trying to score a live one.

There is such a thing as ‘entrapment’, and if Bob’s version of his guilt is to be taken at face value, entrapment can also come in the form of ‘associated entrapment’….and that to me sucks really bad.

Well folks , this woman is innocent, how do we know ,
we know in Australia because of her demenour, her dignity and how she has maintianed such strength .
Indonesia hates Australians because of our generosity
our willingness to make friends and stay friends with other countries . Our Government has not stepped in to this because of the fear that the rest of us dont have . We are in fear of these cheesy faced liars and war mongers .Look what happened in East Timor .
They are blood hungry arse holes and send em on in .
Bali we lost 200 Aussies similair to Sept 11 . The perpetrators are known and drink coffee near where our people were lost. Lets get real . If we leave Bali the Indonesians will clain the territory and we have another East Timor . These people are arseholes and I dont care who I have offended.

unlike Indonesia. it is my understanding that The Australian Justice System heavily believes that “one is innocent until ‘proven’ guilty” where as is seems the indonesians are quite the opposite. Don’t get me wrong - i do respect indonesia and its laws / culture, however, i also strongly beleive in Human Rights and Equal Opportunities. The UN needs to step in and look at the condition of prisoners and prison cells with in the jail. I dont think ANY of the prisoners should have to stand in the squaller they currently experience. Its disgusting and immoral and how can anyone be rehabilitated when they are to busy fighting for their own life - own health and own sense of dignity.

Schapelle Corby is a guilty liar. She should be disgusted in herself for putting her family through this ordeal. There has been no evidence presented to date that proves her innocence. I hope she gets life for smuggling drugs that kill our children. The rest of you supporters are emotionally attached to her. Pull your heads out of the sand.

Bleeding hearts??? I think that is a gross misrepresentation. For sure only Schapelle knows whether she is guilty or not…however as she has continued to conduct herself in a dignified and intelligent manner it seems at odds with someone who would be so stupid to just stuff drugs into their boogie bag having being a seasoned traveller and well aware of the customs process just to begin with. In addition to this it seems ironic that with drugs being so accessible on the streets (much like Nimbin here in Australia)they would hypocritically be so narrow minded in their approach to drug cases. The judges made it quite clear from the outset before even hearing the defence that she would be found guilty. That is total injustice.Australia has done nothing but continue to support indonesia even after a terrorist bombing and yet not even fair treatment has been granted.Schapelle supporters are not mindless bleeding hearts - we are simply indignant of the injustice.
Would also appreciate an address and info re: allowable care packages for Schapelle.

If I were a frequent traveller to Bali, I’ll think like this:

1. There’s no proper check in customs (I don’t know if my bag has been x-rayed before it goes to conveyor).

2. There’s a profitable market for marijuana in Bali.

What would I do then?

Lex, I would probably grow hydrophonic MJ at home.

I would ask my father to pack the bag nicely.

Maybe my brother can help me carry thru the customs ( I’ll be too damned nervous!).

Hi Nick and others,

I have read your report on visiting the Kerobokan jail and found it very interesting.
I do live too in Indonesia, not in Bali but Jakarta ; ).
I have read many things about Ms Corby and my fellow citizen Blanc and as it shows thru your discussion with Bob, whether all of them guilty or not, he is the smartest one. Didnt get attention focused on him and managed to ‘negotiate’ a solution which for the two other cases isnt easy anymore because too much media fuss suround their stories and its sad in a way that the good intentions of many people is in fact reducing their chances to get to a ‘deal’…
Im a woman, single, 34 and its the second time in my life i live here and i do agree with you, as long as we dont put ourselves in risky situations, here or elsewhere, we go on fine and again, everyone knows that in countries such as Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, etc…drugs=death penalty.

Everybody is entitled to their thoughts. I truely feel sorry for everybody that is caught up in such a dirty filthy bribing prison. Have been to Bali - on motorbikes - guns held - and bribe taken to get out of it. Who is to say that drugs would not have been planted on us if the bribe was not paid. On arrival at customs at Bali - custom officer was not going to stamp my passport in unless I invited him to my hotel room ( young single female on own - good target)- thankfully seasonal traveller to Bali behind me saw my distress and interveaned.

So who gives us the right to say someone is guilty on hearsay especially coming from the monkey court held in Bali on Schapelle’s case. To think guilty and sick people can take so many people’s lives in bombings and get pats on the backs from the Bali courts must make everybody have compassion. I will also add my disgust and disallusion with the australian government(have for a while now) and Australian Federal Police on their ANTI and non helpful hand in Schapelle’s case (what have they got to hide). Remember we will all have kids that grow up you never know whats around the corner. To Schapelle and family the best I can offer is try and keep your chins up and I’m thinking of not only you but all the other poor bastards there.

Well well well, Australian people are so innocent that’s the only thing I should say to sum up this stupid case. Let’s not forget that if this drugs got passed that Bali airport, that greedy bitch would have made a lot of money out of weed addicts.

Let’s say she’s innocent 1% and 99% guilty because there is no fucking chance that stuff have gotten into her bag “accidentally”. Ask yourself a slightly smarter question, if you were a drug deal(ers), would you risk your big, fat investment in a total stranger’s bag ? C’mon people, wake up and smell the roses, it’s simple. She’s part of a drugs smuggling ring that’s well established and her family is absolutely involved in this business. Look at her family, her mom, her sister and brother and especially her father. It’s scary to even look at them. I can totally see them going into Centrelink and waste our tax money everyday. These people are trash trash trash. In one instance, they are all now loved and looked up by so many Aussies, even the intelligent ones come to love them. GOSH, give me a break. Let’s help those who need it most. Let’s go down the street and help a drug addict who is jobless and hannging his life on the edge of a road…Let’s move on all of us and condemm this action by both drug dealers and their sympathisers…

Love from Kate and God bless you all

Kate Dec 6th, What a horrible person you must be. There is no proof that the drugs were Schapelle’s. Baggage handlers have been arrested and are in jail for drug smuggling. A baggage handler was seen on TV wearing a costume stolen out of someone’s unlocked bag. The boogie bag was checked in at Brisbane and was not seen by Schapelle until Bali. The drugs were meant for someone in Sydney, another baggage handler.
Katherine Bonella, who wrote Schapelle’s MY Story is 100% sure she is innocent. Even if the drugs were hers, 20 years is over the top, even 20 months is severe. Marijuana never killed anyone. Alcohol is a thousand times worse. Have you ever heard of marijuana brawls? Do people misbehave when stoned? Is violence associated with Marijuna? I don’t think so. It is a natural herb, grows wild and is there for the smoking, given to humanity by God.
