Visiting Pelangi Hotel in Seminyak Bali

This morning I visited the Pelangi Hotel on Jl. Dhyana Pura in Seminyak.

Steve and Lara from WA Australia recently stayed there and recommended it. The Pelangi had a distinct Indonesian touch combined with some slick modern styling. The pool overlooks the beach and being at the end of ‘party central’ (Jl. Dhyana Pura) the nightlife is right there too.

I talked to Sales Exec. Anik, who is very interesting. She told me she has worked at the hotel for 1 year and that she is both Hindu and Muslim. ‘How can it be?’ I thought. Anik’s father is a Muslim from Java and her mother is a Hindu from Bali. Anik said she has to pray five times a day in respect to her Muslim faith and give offerings twice a day for her Hindu faith. “That must be hard” I said. “No it’s not really, I am used to it.” she said. “Which one do you feel represents the real you?” I asked. “I think both are the same.” She said. I asked if she married a Hindu or a Muslim would that be a problem for anyone. Anik said she would follow the religion of her husband and that her parents were cool with either.

Anik told me there is a big Hindu on the 23rd of this month and a big parade on Jl. Legian in Kuta.

My brother Chris arrived yesterday and managed to race through immigration and leave the airport before I got there. When Donovan and Carrie came through it took them 2 hours to get processed and this time I arrived an hour after the scheduled arrival. Chris called me from Kuta and we caught a cab to my house in Seminyak. Our first stop was the very handy Warung Mimpi (sound familiar Donovan?). When Chris and I arrived at the house my pembantu Wayan was at work and her 9 year old son Kadek was sleeping in one of my arm chairs.

I’m thinking of taking Chris to Ubud this week check out a Balinese dance. We’ll get in dancing mood before with some arak to fully appreciate the culture, it would be rude not to.

Next weekend we are planning to go to Negara (that happening town in the west of the island) to see the buffalo races with Ika.

Here’s the latest from the Indonesian Presidential election.

Nick, you seem to be slackening off or becoming more Indonesian… With your jam karet approach to picking up your brother, that’s not nice matey!!!!
I hope we get to see pic’s of you & Chris dancing!

The Pelangi Hotel looks huge. Anik is lovely. I like the way she incorporates 2 faiths into her life.

Chris and Kadek both look like they
need rest - Chris starting to relax
and Kadel well into it.

Is it nice to be back? Will see you before long.

I think Anik is exactly what I expect from an Indonesian. Indeed, she even fulfills my expectations way ahead. She’s cool!

One question, though, that you could ask her, Nick. What about if she married a Christian?
