Using the Prefix Me with Root Words

With the Word of the Day, you will have noticed under the basic word I have listed the root word using a prefix or suffix. You can only use a certain prefix with certain words. By that I mean the first letter of the word defines the prefix. I will clarify this.

The prefix Me can only be used with words whose first letter begins with L,R,M,N,NY.
Examples:

Melari-To run away.

Merendam-To soak.

Memanis-To decorate.

Menanti-To wait.

Menyani-To sing.

The prefix Mem can only be used with words whose first letter begins with B or P. However,in the case of the letter P,the P is dropped from the root word.
Examples:

Membaca-To read.

Memukul-To hit.

The prefix Men can only be used with words whose first letter begins with C,D,J,and T. However, in the case of the letter T,the T is dropped from the root word.
Examples:

Mencari-To look.

Mendarat-To land.

Menjemput-To pick up someone.

Menambal-To patch or mend.

The prefix Meng can only be used with words whose first letter begins with G,H and K. However,in the case of the letter K,the K is dropped. The prefix Meng is also used when the initial sound is a VOWEL.
Examples:

Meggelek-To roll over.

Menghadap-To face, front.

Mengering-To dry out.

Mengarah-Aim,direction.

The prefix Meny can only be used with words whose first letter begins with S.
Example:

Menyapu-To sweep.

The other main prefix is Pe. I will write these out if you require them.

G’Day Nick,

Cheers mate. In Yogykarta they say (and I bet i’ll spell this wrong!) - Tak opor-opor. That’s Bahasa Jawa!.

Anybody out there care to correct me?. Hey Yenny, how do you spell it?

Hi Yenny,

Thanks for the proper spelling in Bahsa Jawa. I wasn’t sure of that not having studied it.

And, I write and use Bahasa Indonesia as I was taught. That is, by a Professor from Universitas Indonesia.

Barrie,

I’ve just started learning Bahasa. Your word of the day is a great resource. On this one, I have a question and a request.

First the question: on the prefix Meny that’s only used with words whose first letter begins with S, is the S always dropped?

Now the request: please provide the additional information you offered on prefix Pe.

Thanks, Tim

Hi Tim,

Yes, MENY is only used for those words beginning with the letter ‘S’.

The same applies when using the prefix PENY’. I will do the PE prefix for you soon.

I put this tip somewhwere else but I will give it to you now: Yaitu (that is), pick 10 words out of the Indo/English dictionary per day. If you can reemeber at least 7 or 8 of those words and their meanings, then you will find it will vastly improve your vocabulary. Just learn the root word (basic word).

Thanks Tim.
