The US government has an information gathering wing called the CIA (Central Intelligence Agency). They have a website, The World Factbook, that gives a detailed facts and figures analysis of every country in the world. The site is accessible to the general public and is not a feel good culture tour, its hard facts and quantifiable data.
It is interesting to take a look at Indonesia's listing especially People and Economy. Indonesia has oil reserves, but the luck of infrastructure means they can't get the stuff out of the ground quick enough. Indonesia gives a subsidy for petrol so instead of reaping the benefits of high oil prices, they are actually hurting.
