Tuesday Oct 7th in Kuta Bali

Beautiful October day here in Bali with the sun blazing and people out and about.

I had the pleasure of talking to Sean on the phone this morning. He’s recently returned from a RTW business trip to Thailand, India and S.Africa and seems glad to be back in Portland Oregon.

One of my tasks is to find us a place for our end of year meeting which this year will be here in Bali. We are looking for hotel that isn’t super expensive, has AC rooms with an AC meeting room. No problem you say, you can find that combo all over the place. Well not exactly. You can find a ton of rooms to look at and a ton of cheap rooms. Some hotels even have meeting rooms….for 200 people or open air meeting areas.

My area of choice today was along Jalan Oberoi in Seminyak where I checked out a bunch of places including Bali Intan Village. They have a huge meeting room, their small one is under renovation.

One of he funny things I’ve noticed visiting some of the nicer hotels is they have security, which for the most part is a joke. A group of guys in uniform stand at the booth at the front and stare at guests as they pass through. Today at the Discovery I asked the security man if they had the surf memorabilia display. He had absolutely no idea what I was asking and waved me through. The other day at another place I got stopped and the security man said “Where are you going?”. “Over there” I said pointing. “What for?” he said. “To talk to someone.” I answered. He let me go. So if you ever want to get into an event without clearance just say “I’m going over there to talk to someone” and that should get you through.

The Discovery Hotel on Jalan Kartika Plaza has a surf memorabilia display that includes the first surf board used in Bali. It belonged to Bob Koke, the American hotel owner who introduced surfing to Bali in 1936. I’ll post a photo tommorrow.

I used to use similar lines, when staying out the back of a Restaurant for 8 months, I used to look forward to friends visiting me in Bali so I could go to their Hotel & swim, but when noone was in town I used to pack a towel & drink & stuff into a bag, go to any BIG Hotel with nice pool’s. If Security stopped me, I used to say my parent’s were staying there & I was coming to see them, I always got in!!!!

I’ve had hotel staff show me a ton of rooms since being here. I notice that often when we leave room it doesn’t get locked. All you’d have to do is ask to look at a couple of rooms, then return to one of them a hour later, you’d have the room and the pool.
