Tuesday July 27th 2004 in Kuta Bali

Tuesday morning I was eagerly expecting my usual phone call from my friend Sean in Oregon.

We do this every week to catch up and talk about sports. Actually we do other things too, like talk about how I can make Baliblog more interesting and useful.

After my call I went downstairs to turn my computer on and noticed one of my ripening papayas had been savaged by the neighbor’s cat. That creature climbs over the wall when I’m out and goes through my bin. Half the papaya was gone with the remaining half sporting claw marks. I think I might prepare a ’special’ cat snack sometime with ‘interesting ingredients’.

Right now Kuta seems packed with tourists. I just passed the pizza restaurants that include Warung 96 and the are all full. I just ate a great pizza at Good luck restaurant on Jl. Benesari down from all thr other places. Feta pizza for 32,000rp…very good! Good luck also does decent salads.

One of the regulars at Internet Outpost in Kuta recently has been an Aussie guy aged about 30, obviously a surfer. His deal (we all know this because of the long extended phone calls home to mum) is that he has a baby by an Indonesian lady and is figuring out how to handle it. I’d say he’s not that worldly and the other day was telling his mum he has paid someone a deposit of $1,000 for part of a shop business, hoping to set his girlfreind up when he goes home to Australia. He said to his mum “All her friends have babies by tourists who just run off and leave them, I don’t want to just leave her without helping her out.” His heart is in the right place but he seems like a blind man walking through a sea of nonsense. I’m dreading the call that says “Mum she wants me to become a Muslim and stay, will that mean I can’t eat ’snags’ at the bbq?”

On another subject I know that shopping is a major draw for visitors to Bali. Of course there is some decent clothing on sale but I have to tell you a lot of the shirts that get made by Billabong and Quiksilver are made by the same factory and get labels slapped on later. Don’t believe me? Just check out a couple of the plainer shirts and you’ll see them under other labels. Shops like The Curl and Star Surf stock a cross section of gear and the fact that have glass front windows and price tags is a hint that you cannot bargain. For cheap surf wear hit Poppies I and II as well as Jl. Melasti and Jl. Bakung Sari.

I actually think for all the surf shops around and the prices they charge the range of shirts is quite poor. Yes they have mastered the art of putting a giant diagonal logo on a Beefy-T but designing an attractive short or long sleeve shirt seems beyong their reach with styles fit for the Brady Bunch on most racks.

Angie I do have more than 2 shirts now.

Lovely weather right now. Get over to Bali and enjoy some of it.

I’m sure the Aussie guy trusts his girlfriend, but I think I’d want to get a DNA test just to be sure who’s kid it is.

Glad the weather’s good in Bali. [Isn't it always?]

We’ll be there from 3rd August, staying at the Bali Ayu in Seminyak for 6 days, then the Tjampuhan in Ubud for 4 days, then points beyond [not booked yet].

Love to meet up with you. What do we do?

I dont thik he will be posting on Bali-blog for a month as he will have to rest up as the operation takes a hell of a lot out of you. So there you go you know why he is absent.

Damn. I should be in Bali right now. I’ve gotta hustle some time off work. Early August, late July is no doubt the best time to be in Bali.
