Trip to Balian Beach Bali

I just got back from an overnight trip to Balian Beach on the SW coast of Bali.

The occasion was Miguel’s birthday and he was gagging to do something. I’ll do a proper write of this trip tomorrow after I pick the photos I wants to add.

Balian is a non touristy area, with some of that paradise-like atmosphere tourists dream of but rarely find hanging around Kuta or Nusa Dua in a 5-star resort.

Bumped into some friends there and had a wonderful swim up a river.

Another week is about to start and I have a ton of updating to do as well as hotel reporting. Barrie and Chandrika dropped off an England t-shirt for me at Internet Outpost, how cool! By the way, Barrie’s microbrews from WA went down a treat.

You mean there’s a microbrew scene in WA that I’m going to have to investigate when I get there in two weeks? Jeez, life’s tough.

G’Day Chris,

Around the Perth are there are several microbreweries. In the centre of Perth on the corner of Murray & Wiliam Streets there is an old pub which has it’s own brewery down in the cellar and can be viewed whilst sipping an ale or two. There are several pubs like this in the Perth city centre.

If you head down South to the Margaret River region, there are a few microbreweries there as well. The best being ‘Dead Dog’. The area is also renowned for its wineries. Check out some of the smaller farm wineries because they are producing a brilliant drop.

Also check out the breweries closer to Bsselton and Bunbury.

Another place for microbreweries is the Swan Valley. This is the rich and lush fertile area north of Perth where the first Italian vinters settled. Heaps of wineries and cottage industries. Once a year there is a Wine & Food festival which lasts 2 weeks. I did hear before I left that they are planning to make it twice a year.

I remember the Matilda Bay Brewing Company in Freo when I was there back in ’93.

Since then many more have sprung up.

If Oregon had a sunnier climate and fewer SUVs, I think it could be a second Australia… bit more carefree towards life, we love to eat and drink, and we make great booze. Though I’m guessing that Oregon has better coffee. But Oz has sunshine.

Is there a micro scene in other parts of Oz?

G’Day Ant,

The microbrewry cottage industry is a burgeoning business all over Oz. I did hear they were going to have a National comp to find the best Oz microbrewer.

Wouldn’t ya just love to be a taster!. Remeber spit AND no swallow (He, he..!)

Perth sucks. Do yourself a favour and go to Melbourne instead. It’s cold, but you won’t be bored.
