Indonesia is a country of contradictions. You might a bar situated between a couple of mosques, or a sexy dancer at a wedding with 200-300 Muslim guests, as I did.
Most people are fairly conservative but also easy going (is that a contradiction?). Whatever. In Bali most people are Hindu and their attitude towards sex is more relaxed than in other parts of the country. The Hindu religion is all about fertility and re birth. The Balinese think that homosexuals are close to God because they can speak to the male and female Gods. I once met a pedanda (high preist) on Gunung Agung, who was dressed up a red silk outfit like he was auditioning for Earth Wind and Fire.
In Seminyak there are many cross-dressers and the Oriental Theater on Jl. Nakula (opposite Jl. Double Six) has a drag show.
Recently in Sumatra, where people are a touch more conservative, plans for a transvestite show upset locals, who feel promoting this kind of thing will lead to more people have sex. I don’t know about you, but when I see a guy in drag I’m not that turned on. In fact sex is the last thing I’m thinking of. What do you guys think? Does the sight of a transvestite get you hot under the collar?

It’s Indonesia, with its pros and cons, with its values and traditions.
It’s East not West.
That’s all I can comment on…
Beauty is Beauty no matter what your sexual orientation is and some of the Transvestites in Bali are beautifull. As westerner’s we sometimes forget the right’s we have in our native country,so we should encourage freedom of expression evertwhere. In this Country of excessive violence we do not need another false cause.
