A train crash in Surabaya Java has killed at least 13 people today. Two trains heading in the same direction collided around 2am.
For people planning to travel in Java, the train offers an affordable way to go. I have traveled in Java by plane and local bus, but never used the train. Surabaya is the 2nd largest city in Indonesia after Jakarta. A port city, it is a stop off point for the US Navy and has a zoo, which I visited in 1993. I found Surabayans friendly, with less stress than Jakartans. Food stalls abound, but Surabaya in general doesn’t seem to have that much to offer.
