Lance Armstrong is ‘The Man’ as far as cycling goes and has just won his 6th Tour de France.
For cycling fans coming to Indonesia we have our own event to look forward to, the Tour de Indonesia.
With fewer steep hills but twice the sweat of the Tour De France anyone who finishes this race will have to be in ‘Lance like’ shape. It takes it out of you walking 6 blocks on Jl. Legian in the blazing tropical sun, just imagine grinding out 130km road sections.
The US Postal Service won’t be fielding a team but there will be 11 foreign teams plus 5 teams from Indonesia.
Tourists may wonder if cycling is a viable way to explore Indonesia or Bali. My thoughts are in selected places that are not heavily trafficed a bicycle would work okay but to put miles on the clock you will be hitting main roads which are no fun to be on. The air quality on those roads is poor and I can’t imagine sucking wind for hours in that kind of environment.
I recently met Johann from Singapore who is cylcing from Europe to New Zealand. He has done large sections in Indonesia and you can check out his site for the story.
Johann was telling me that even in modern Singapore where he’s from its hard to find decent road bikes and cycle gear, simply because most people are not into cycling. Finding quality bikes in Indonesia is going to be hard too so if you are planning a tour bring your bike.
