The wet season announced its arrival last night with a torrential downpour.
I woke at around 4am to the sound of rain hammering on my roof. We need rain for sure after a sunny dry season and I’m sure the farmers are happy.
Walking over to Cafe Moke I saw our local drainage canals were almost overflowing and strong rain was still coming down.
Riding my motorbike carefully down Jalan Legian the traffic wasn’t as busy as usual and after going around the one way system and back onto the straight I came to the flooded section of the street near Star Surf where there was over a foot of water in the road. Cars and bikes moved slowly to avoid hidden obstacles. I wore my waterproof jacket and pants and arrived at Internet Outpost looking like a drowned rat.
The time is now 1.17pm and the rain has stopped. Skies are overcast and I’m sure tonight we’ll get another lashing.
My friend Putu told me that usually the heavy rain starts in October. Maybe El Nino has a part in this.

I guess now I am going to have to go back to the rainy season strategy of carrying my rain jacket everywhere with me. I’d almost forgotten about the flooded streets in Kuta and the daily evening downpour.
Hey Nick - do the mozzies get a lot worse when the rain comes?
I remember being in Bali 4 years ago - my last day there was the first day of the monsoon. It rained for 12 hours straight, and i had to wade down thigh-high streets to do my last minute t-shirt shopping!!
Keep on blogging,
Dunk.
The mozziwes might get a bit worse but they’re here all year. In the middle of the dry season they seemed to peak and someone said that was a big time for them.
G’Day Nick,
Putu is correct about the arrival of the rainy season. Seems Mr Nino delights in rearranging the atmosphere eh. Actually, Candika said it was pourin’ down when I rang her this morning.
Too many nuts with dangerous toys in this world disturbing the natural processes of Mother Nature eh.
