APA: What,Which.
The word Apa is basically a question word. When combined with other prefixes, the formats change. Using the word apa for basic questions with the words ini and itu, we have:
Apa Ini?-What is this?
Apa itu?-What is that?
Inserting a noun qualifies the question:
Apa bunga ini?-What flower is this?
Apa warna itu?-What colour is that?
Note: You cannot use the word apa when asking a question which involves numerals. The prefix Ber must be used:
Berapa waktu sekarang?-What is the time now? OR Jam berapa sekarang?
Ongkos berapa ini?-What is the cost of this?
Or you could simply ask when referring to the cost of anything, ‘berapa?’
Berapa kain ini?-How much is this cloth?
Using the prefix Meng, it then becomes a question of situation.
Mengapa dia pegi ke sana?-Why did he go there?
Mengapa anak-anak miskin?-Why are the children poor?
Other examples of Apa in combination:
Apalagi-Moreover
Saya tidak suka orang itu, apalagi dia kasar –I don’t like that man, moreover he is rude.
Apapun-No matter what.
Apapun saya akan pergi ke sana nanti-No matter what, I will go there later.
Ada Apa-What’s up?
Dia sakit. Ada apa?-He is sick. What’s wrong?

Hi Hermann,
When you first start learning Bahasa Indonesia it really doesn’t seem that complicated. After a couple of years you begin to wonder why you started in the first place!.
It’s all a matter of memorising words. If you can do that and apply them into a sentence with the appropriate prefix etc, then it is easy.
Here’s a tip for you. When I first started learning, I chose 10 words per day to learn from the dictionary. If you can retain 7 of those words in your memory bank then you are doing well!.
Hey, Barrie!
And they say Bahasa Indonesia is easy…
Regards.
